Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Excellent museum in Placentia, felt like a trip back to late 1800s/early 1900s. The objects were well organized with detailed information presented clearly and honouring the original families that helped create this place. The staff was very helpful and friendly, which helped the feeling of going back in time.

Absolutely recommend it if you’re looking to learn more about the rich heritage and important role of this community in Newfoundland’s history.

Great little museum with some really interesting local history including things like locals being forced off the nearby islands into bigger towns. The main floor is all set up like the home would have been back in the day. We got a tour from a local and it was short but informative.

Out walking one afternoon we just stumbled on this museum near our B&B. It is well worth making a special effort to get here.

We appreciated the tour of the premises. Very knowledgable staff who showed us both the lifestyle of the former residents of the home, and the previous occupation of different nations in Placentia.

We are amazed that TripAdvisor has so few reviews of this truly interesting and well-done museum about key themes of Newfoundland history. We stopped here while driving from Cape St. Mary's to Trinity on a rainy day and, quite frankly we thought we might just stop in for a quick visit before going to a restaurant in Placentia for lunch. We ended up staying in the museum for 3 hours!!! We were given an interesting tour (about 45 minutes) of the historic house, its history, and that of its owners through the years. But in many of the rooms were displays on topics much broader than just the history of the house. There were lots of displays and signboards about the codfish moratorium and its devastating impact on Newfoundland fishing communities, about how the US established a WW2 military base in nearby Argentia and the effects on the local economy when it opened and later closed, about how the outport resettlement programs severely impacted the people of the region, and many other interesting topics. The tourguide (who is also the manager of the museum) encouraged us to go back to look at those displays after the tour and, as we did so she also answered questions and gave us her family's personal involvements in many of those topics. She was so knowledgeable and interesting, and we had a wonderful time talking to her as well as ingesting the fascinating information in the exhibits. We really enjoyed this place and know that others who visit will do likewise!

We were the only visitors at the time so we got a very comprehensive guided tour. We learned a great deal about the area.

It shows us royal relics, period artifacts, and exhibits. A House Divided (the resettlement of inner Placentia Bay) plus Basque headstone and copy of oldest original civil document from Canada. There are guided Museum Tours.

This small museum explains the role the O'Reilly Family played in Placentia History. Many of the items in the house are from the original family, but many items are representative pieces from the era. As a descendent of the O'Reillys, I enjoyed seeing the mention of the ancestors and how they helped shape the Placentia area during the booming fishing years (an industry that collapsed).

Our tour guide was a charming local with a delightful dialect. Listening to her tour of the house was my favorite part. The home is a treasure trove of artifacts and a peak into the early 20th century in Newfoundland.
