Winner of the 2015 Arizona Governor's Heritage Preservation Honor Award....

Winner of the 2015 Arizona Governor's Heritage Preservation Honor Award. Fort Verde is one of the best preserved examples of an Indian Wars period fort in Arizona. This original Military Headquarters is now a museum which contains artifacts, photos, videos, and interpretive exhibits focused on the history and lives of those who lived and served at Fort Verde: soldiers, Indian Scouts, settlers, doctors, and Native Americans. Three of the original homes along Officer's Row are still remaining and furnished with period artifacts.

We tend to stop at these types of historical site when traveling. My husband found the information very interesting and Sheila the ranger was a great wealth of local information. Well laid out and great signs, plenty of things to keep kids involved.

Take time to see how life in this part of our country began. Great history of soldiers and Native Americans. Stroll through the quarters and look at the magnificent scenery off in the distance.

This was a good place to show the little kids and have them learn through the junior ranger program. We were the only ones there so made full use of the opportunities

Great time! Really cool old buildings. Nice museum. Shelia the park ranger was awesome. She offered to let my girls wear some period dresses. The gift center has a lot of books to choose from. I bought one and should have got a couple more. Guess I'll have to go back. It really feels like you step back in time... More

We really enjoyed visiting this fort which retains several of the original buildings including the houses of the commanding officer and the doctor. What really surprised us was to find such 19c gentility in what was quite a lawless area of the wild west. Even more amusing were the three-seater toilets. Were they really used by mother, father and child,... More

We really enjoyed stepping back in time for an hour or so and visiting this old fort. Our favorite was the doctor's office.
