Overview
More
In medieval Lorca the castle, and under the protection of the Alfonsina Tower, housed the Jewish quarter of the city. The excavations of this neighborhood have made it possible to know the Jewish houses of the time, with a rectangular floor plan, compartmentalized in rooms, and which can be used for living rooms, kitchens, warehouses and other rooms with different uses. Benches attached to the wall, tinajeros, cupboards, raised alcoves, etc. In lorquina Jewry the Hebrews established their synagogue, an exceptional example of Jewish religious art in Spain. The temple was built underground because according to the laws of the time it could not exceed the height of the churches and this, together with the fact that it was never converted into a Christian temple, has allowed the synagogue to remain in an exceptional state. The Archaeological Park of Lorca Castle has been conceived as a space to enjoy the finds excavated in the Jewish quarter through a walk through the streets of the archaeological remains of the Jewish quarter, discover how were their houses, their trades and traditions, And the feeling of Jewish spirituality with the visit to its exceptional synagogue.

We visited this during our day at Lorca Castle and the history behind the Jews at Lorca is fascinating. There is a guided tour of the site. The synagogue is very well preserved and restoration has been done very skilfully and sensitively.

What a find! Imagine the moment when a workman, digging out froundations for the new Parador hotel, shouts: "Hey, Boss! Come and look at this. It's a wall; and a floor; obviously man-made!" Then the builders stop, and the archaelologists come in. But miraculously the...More

On the site of the castle (and the Parador hotel) these excavations are well worth visiting. You have to go with a (Spanish) guide into this section; we were fortunate in that other visitors didn't arrive, so the guide gave us a private visit in...More
