Step House is on the Wetherill Mesa of the park. The great thing about the Step House is that it is open for self-guided tours. The hike to the Step House is easy and offers beautiful views. The Step House is open only during the summer season.

Step House is a cliff dwelling found in the Wetherill Mesa section of Mesa Verde National Park. My family was lucky enough to visit in early October when the road to this cliff dwelling was only open for a few more days. It is closed now and will reopen in the spring. All of the main points of interest in... More

This is a relative short loop of a trail at Mesa Verde national park. It's self-guided but there is a ranger there when we went. It's small but you can explore it. Called the Step House because there are a couple of different levels with steps. It's actually pretty small but it's still amazing how they built this kind of... More

We went to visit this site at the end of the Wetherell loop and hiked the short distance to the house. We marvelled at how people lived here so long ago and the difficulties they must have faced just to exist and carry out basic life functions. No wonder life expectancy was so low. It is really worth the visit... More

A super guided tour, you will not be disappointed. Moderate activity, pack water. Plenty of parking and bathrooms at start of trail.

Our family visit to Colorado took us on an exploration of Step House on Wetherill Mesa in the Mesa Verde National Park. We came by Jeep (autos work as well) equipped with 4 road bikes and and 2 seniors and 2 avid hikers. After an amazing bike ride loop through this section of Mesa Verde (about 7 miles) we walked... This is a 1-mile round trip to some ruins. I think the other 2 ruin sites I saw on the Chapin Mesa were better, perhaps because of the guided element. There was a small guidebook and a ranger onsite, but he didn’t seem predisposed to answering questions. Plus it didn’t have anything I’d not seen already. Walls, wooden beams, kiva,... More

Like all of the cliff dwellings, this is amazing and must not be missed. It was mind boggling to learn how people could live in such an environment in the center of a cliff

On our last morning in Mesa Verde National Park we decided to drive out on Wetherill Mesa and see if we were up to touring the Step House. Despite huffing and puffing a bit on the trail down to Step House we were enthralled. Ranger Luann was delightful, informative and helpful. You're able to get feel for the beauty, challenges...
