Westview is a sprawling cemetery just west of the downtown area, and is the final resting place of many of the cities dignitaries, including Asa Chandler and Joel Chandler Harris. It is the largest cemetery in the southeast, and is built in part on a former confederate battlefield. I'd recommend taking a car, both because the cemetery is huge and because the surrounding neighborhood is dicey. Perhaps because of its size, it lacks some of the charm of Oakland Cemetery, but this should be on the list for any history or cemetery buff.

It had been ages since I visited Westview and I had forgotten how large and beautiful it is. You could easily get lost exploring the vast landscape of tombstones and winding roads, which for some might not be a bad thing. I highly recommend picking up a map before your visit and doing research if you're looking for anyone in particular. Westview is full of men and women who made Atlanta what it is today. The Candlers, The Woodruffs, Joel Chandler Harris, L. P Grant, Henry "New South" Grady and chef Ria Pell. The list reads like the who's who to the most over the top headline making Atlanta party that could have been.

Westview is a really neat place to visit. The sprawling grounds are chock-full of history. There are names that any Atlantan would recognize: Grady, Candler, Woodruff, Egleston, Hartsfield, Cheshire, Adair, Egleston and others. Many of the tombs and vaults are elaborate and beautiful. The mausoleum is huge and impressive; don't miss it. There's even a little monument about a civil war battle that was fought on the grounds.
If you're an out of town tourist, Westview might not be the best attraction (unless you're specifically interested in cemeteries and history). It really holds more of an interest for Atlanta residents who want to see some of the city's historical connections.

perhaps not as "historic" as Oakland across town (1884 v 1850) nor as well known but still worth a visit. Guided tours are not currently available (I understand they are being considered) but a brochure is offered for self-guided tours. The place is huge (largest in the Southeast US) so consider driving or a long hike.
Many beautiful and ornate monuments and mausoleums mark the graves of some of the most notable people in Atlanta history and the beautiful "community mausoleum" (the largest of its kind in the world) w/ its gorgeous chapel is worth the visit alone.
The cemetery sits on the edge of one of the WBtS battles for Atlanta (Ezra Church) and a marker is at the site of the church and some other markers on the grounds make note of the battle and a large monument marks the area set aside for CSA veterans.
(note: visited as part of the Phoenix Flies program offered by the Atlanta Preservation Center)

Although it doesn't have the cheek-to-jowl packed charm of it's cousin Oakland Cemetary, Westview is well worth the trip west of downtown. Westview is the elegant, dignified counterpoint to Oakland's vibrant, visual-overload chaos.
Westview doesn't have the multitude of statues and imposing monuments to Atlanta's elite, but it has a peaceful setting that's perfect for meandering around and contemplating life. It also has two buildings that are must-see for anyone interested in architecture.
The imposing gate house at the entrance is a beautiful stone building. There is no access to it right now (boarded up), but the exterior alone is worth looking at. I can't wait until the interior is restored and we can climb up and enjoy the view from that tower.
Westview Abbey, tucked away at the back, looks like it was plucked out of medieval Europe and placed in the North Ga hills. From the ornate carvings to the stained glass windows, the Abbey is reason alone to visit. The tiny chapel at the Abbey is amazing. I get the feeling I am in the private chapel of some grand country estate in England when I'm there.

I greatly enjoyed my visit to Westview Cemetery. It's a must see for Historians. It's peaceful with it's rolling hills and remarkable statues. The mausoleum was simply stunning. The grounds are clean. Explored for hours! Thank you for all of your hard work staff at Westview!

Reminiscent of the late 18th century Gothic revival cathedrals of Western Europe - Westview Abbey, housed within the community Mausoleum located at Westview Cemetery, is a stunning reminder of a bygone era.
The vision of Westview Abbey extends far beyond the exquisite craftsmanship of a chapel surmounted by ribbed vaulted masonry and lancet windows.
Words like exquisite & extraordinary, can not do justice to this magnificent chapel. And let's not forget the two dozen beautiful examples of stained glass artistry adorning the halls of the mausoleum. Simply Breathtaking!
Setting aside an hour or so to wonder the monuments erected at Westview Cemetery is unquestionably time well spent. The 582 acre cemetery is a definite must see for all Atlanta residents.
If you are planning a visit to our city, be sure to pencil-in a visit to Westview Abbey & Mausoleum.

A must-visit for students of Atlanta history. This is the final resting place of so many of the individuals and families that helped to shape Atlanta into the city it is today. A beautiful, peaceful cemetery with rolling hills and many large shade trees.

Many Atlanta greats are buried here, and in the summer there are concerts and bike tours to really learn and appreciate the history of this cemetery...after your visit, venture across the street to Six Feet Under or Tin Lizzy's for food and drinks!

An interesting old cemetery, in a run-down section of Atlanta. It is safe within the cemetery, but not so safe in the neighborhood around it. Very large area with heavily forested trails along the eastern edge. We have seen deer along the trails. Great old stone buildings. In the summer or fall of 2014 we saw a movie being shot in the cemetery. A good place to visit for a very different experience in Atlanta.

Is parking available at the cemetery?

Ample parking. Unlike Oakland cemetery downtown this is a private cemetery. It’s fabulous hope you enjoyed as much as I do.
