This is a fairly interesting destination depending on how much you like local history. The two most famous residents are probably Margaret Mitchell (GWTW) and Bobby Jones (golf). There are other local figures as well.

The cemetery is located just east of downtown Atlanta, within 2 miles. Parking (when I've visited) was in an adjacent gravel lot (or street parking) just outside the west gate. You could also reach it via public transit, though I have not done that (I believe the King Memorial MARTA station is visible a few blocks away).

Inside the perimeter brick wall, there is a grid of streets that divide the cemetery into sub-zones, and within those there are grids of paths as well. There are monuments and headstones covering the past ~ 150 years, so the architectural variety is interesting.

There is a visitors' center centrally located, though I think it has been closed for most of 2020.

Oakland also offers occasional activities such as ghost tours in October (which I have not taken) and a scavenger hunt in Nov/Dec (which I've done twice and enjoyed a lot). Their website has a full calendar of upcoming events.

Given pleasant weather, this is a good place to spend an hour strolling and checking out anything that catches your eye.

This is one of the older cemeteries I’ve visited, some of the sidewalks are over 150 years old (watch your step). Kenny Rogers was laid to rest here, he has a beautiful spot with a big monument. There are maps at the visitor center (across the street from the cemetery) for purchase, it lists all of the stones to visit with a description. It’s a peaceful place in the middle of a bustling town. They are currently under construction, and repaving areas, be mindful and stick to the sidewalks if you can. A must see if you’re in the Atlanta area.

Website states cemetery open even though they are doing construction on road outside of cemetery. However, all entrances are closed. Called phone number in website and it goes to a “gift shop”. Never knew a cemetery to have a gift shop….

Waste of time driving there only to find out it’s closed

You also have to find parking on street or park at one of nearby restaurants and walk

As a middle-aged, native Atlantan, it's surprising that I was past 50 before I ever actually visited this cemetery, despite driving past it endless times.
You can look at photos online, but what I found intriguing was, of course, the history and weathering of the place... but also the small-scale architectures, the flora, and the urbanized layout of the "streets' of the cemetery.
Would recommend booking a walking tour.
Lots of dining opportunities just across the street and an easy walk from MARTA.

Loved visiting this cemetery! It’s huge with tons to look at and explore. We really liked the cell phone audio tours. It was extremely empty on a Saturday morning and we had the whole place almost to ourselves until afternoon tour groups started arriving. Also loved that it was free and dog friendly!

We visited the cemetery on a Saturday morning and found it very pleasant and quiet. We enjoyed perusing around and enjoying the fresh air. I was disappointed in the way the cemetery is addressing racism concerning their many confederate monuments and graves. I felt that the few informational plaques and listening links were meager.

We loved this tour. We signed up for it in advance but it was raining heavily on the day of the tour. The woman at the visitors ctr/book store was very nice and lent us umbrellas. We learned about local history and also of several notables who are buried there. Great tour!

We walked here from downtown although there is the King Memorial Transit station located right by. The Cemetery was peaceful and clean and was very interesting to explore. We weren't on any sort of tour so we just wondered around, perhaps it would've been more rewarding had we been on a tour. Some of the graves are spectacular and the location is full of history. It wasn't my first choice of attraction in Atlanta but I would suggest visiting if you enjoy historical places, or just simply if you want somewhere peaceful to stroll around.

This was a spontaneous stop to walk our pup but fell in love with the beauty of the cemetery. The history of the slave burials made my heart sink but the narration by the foundation was excellent and interesting. I would recommend that small tour for 3rd-6th graders as well. Spoke with a lovely volunteer doing gardening . A great stop for a stroll and history.

This place is absolutely huge!!! There is so much to see here. It is beautiful, relaxing, quiet in the middle of the city, historic, interesting and a must see when visiting Atlanta. The flowers are beautiful and the vaults and tombstones are interesting. Would recommend for sure.
