Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This museum is a must-see for anyone seeking to learn about Black History. The staff was both knowledgeable and friendly. The guided tour was short and concise. They're seeking to expand and I must say there is a real need for the expansion. My family went last month and our children have told their friends to visit. Excellent x 2!

This gem of learning place needs to be more closely tied to a visit to the MLK Visitor Center. It's a mere 10-minute walk from the center through the Sweet Auburn historic business community. More important, the APEX begins the story that continues at the MLK center. Travelers would do well to first check in at the MLK Visitor Center to book their free tour of the MLK family home (places fill up fast so arrive there by at least 10 a.m.), but the wait is usually at least a couple hours . So in that interim, you can leave the center and walk to the APEX which tells the story of Africans BEFORE they became slaves and BEFORE they needed to boycott a bus for civil rights. The APEX explains the story of the great African civilizations and then gives a very visual look at the horrible Middle Passage and slavery. Then there's a look at the early business community of Atlanta ... You can easily get through the museum in a 1/2 hour ... but there are some films that add another 1/2 hour. After the APEX, visitors can then proceed to the MLK center with a full understanding of the crusade MLK waged for rights.

This museum is very well put together, it is perfect for anyone wanting to learn or teach their children black history. The staff was very engaging and hands on. They give guided tours or you can just walk around for yourself...I will visit again

Recently I visited the Apex Museum as part of a Black History trip with a group of college students. Our tour guide left a lot of stuff up to us to figure out and talked to us as if we were third graders. "Yall do know what 'mulatto' mean right...?" They could have just said, "Mulatto means ..." and it would have been taken better. It was okay okay for little kids but now college students. I think that she should take note of what group (age range) she has and adjust accordingly. Also "Malcolm X" name is misspelled. That should definitely be corrected because sometimes mistakes like that tend to stick more in the minds of the visitors when they leave. The museum itself is really nice though.

This was a great opportunity to learn about the contributions of African Americans to American history (particularly in Atlanta and surrounding regions). The few exhibits they had were nice, but we left wanting more. I especially wanted a more balanced perspective of history. Some of the exhibits promote an entitlement or victim mentality rather than the victorious, resilient, and achieving attitude which our ancestors demonstrated. For example: When referring to African slavery the exhibits did not mention that African tribes enslaved and sold each other to other nations. The exhibits also neglected to mention that many of the men that started the Republican party were abolitionists and were very instrumental in the emancipation of slaves in the United States and African Americans gaining the right to vote. The museum lacked hands on learning opportunities for the non-readers in our group. The films need more updating also. The carpet and other decor needed replacing. It did not reflect upon the individuals that were represented there well. I'd like to see the museum receive a huge endowment to complete its renovation and expansion plans. Overall it was an okay experience.

Ideally located on historic Auburn Avenue in downtown ATL. Easy parking right next door and a minimal entrance fee of less than $10 (4.75 for seniors). First I want to suggest that visitors get past the fact that the museum is dated and not high tech or fancy, remember it costs less than $10 for entrance. We opted for the storyteller, and a guided tour. The storyteller alone was worth more than the fee to get in. Her story was about the wife of one of the locals who impacted ATL's history in a big way. Couldn't tell you weren't at the Fox! Bypass the guided tour of the rest of the museum and go on your own, that way you can absorb all the details of the exhibits by reading the plaques yourself. By all means visit the gift shop, that's where some serious info can be purchased in the form of books and posters. Some of the books are written by the founder, an amazing man with lots to share. The book I purchased was a good one to pass on to youth in your family. Shares some insight into how we got to the Ferguson, Missouri situation and what we need to focus on as a people, ALL of us. It is my understanding that a new museum in in the works, focus on that and give generously to the effort and do not be critical of what is evident.

Nice small museum with interesting African American history. There are some things that I already knew but soooo much more that I didn't. I would definitely go at least once more. They show 2 short movies that are narrated by Cicely Tyson and Ossie Davis. There is a lot of history about Auburn street in Georgia as well. I really liked this museum.

On a recent trip to Atlanta I stopped by here. I actually stumbled into this museum by accident looking for the MLK museum and thinking it was it since they are nearby each other. What a great stumble! Loved the exhibits, very vivid and powerful. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. Every American child who lives or visits Atlanta should be required to visit this museum to get a feeling of what it was like during the time of slavery. I am so glad this place exists!!

My girlfriend and I took our sons, (aged 8 and 9) this past weekend before school started for a little history lesson on African Americans - where we come from, where we've been and where we can go. We had a personal tour from Carlissa who did a great job of engaging the kids with questions and trivia along the way. I thought the trip was mainly for the boys but I ended up learing a few very interesting facts myself. Good way to spend some time with the kids and expose them to their history as well.

Did you tell them that Malcolm X's name was mispelled? Also, did you mention that you felt insulted by the way you were talked to? Sometimes it helps to bring things up in the moment so people have an opportunity to make the correction.
