Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Herdon's story is one that should be more well known. This home is so greatly preserved. The tour guides are very professional and very helpful. My boyfriend and I were given a very interesting and informative overview of the Herdons' life before starting the tour. It helped us understand the interesting decor and design that was located throughout the home. We were given a student discount since we are in college which put us at $5 to experience such an amazing tour. There wasn't a dull or boring moment. We were in awe the entire time. We didn't know about the family before coming, but when we left, we felt like we knew them and we both adored them. They seemed like very upstanding people who shared their wealth the best ways they could. I wish more people knew about them. It's a very good piece of black history.

Visited this little known historic treasure, and learned how a man born as a slave accommodated wealth against the odds. Ms Roberta is a walking historian, and has so much knowledge to share!

The Alonzo Herndon home is absolutely stunning. Herndon was born a slave, began working after the Civil War as a share-cropper, opened a small barber shop which he expanded into over 20 shops, and ultimately founded the Atlanta Life Insurance Company. Mr. Herndon became Atlanta's first African American millionaire and the life insurance company is still in existence.

We found the home with hours to view posted on the door, but we could not gain entry. We attempted to call the number listed, but got no response. The home was quite beautiful on the outside, but the area of location is quite run down.

I would like to thank Ms. Roberta for such an informative and sometimes funny.tour. The tour was very thorough and Ms. Roberta answered all our questions about the first Black millionaire in Atlanta and his family. The home is beautifully furnished. It was just my family so we could take as long as we wanted.

The tour of the home of former slave Alonzo Herndon was very informative and a nice way to spend the morning. I am a native Atlantan and knew the story of the Herndon family, but had never taken the time to visit the home. I should have gone sooner. The tour guides were professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Locals and visitors to the city should take the time to visit the Herndon Home and learn of Alonzo Herndon's contribution the Atlanta's history.

What an inspiring story of a rags to riches man who became the first black millionaire in Atlanta. In addition to his lucrative insurance business, he made his fortune in real estate and as a very upscale barber. The home is charming with appointments that make you visualize what it was like when the house was filled with music and laughter. I highly recommend this tour.

The story in this home should be an inspiration to all. A man born a slave became a millionaire and one of Atlanta's most prominent citizens. How did he do it? Take the tour and find out. Tours are given on the hour starting at the back door.
