This is a must see, both for building itself and for the story behind it. The place is very organised despite the low ticket price.

The original prison building was used to display both visual displays and historical records of this Communistic Period and each opf the prisoners was recognized and their story told. It was emotionally moving especially to read of the tortures used and the school children who were interrogated. The memorial statue in the courtyard truly summarized the horror and sadness of the... I was here with my wife and we spent a couple of hours. It's said to find out how comunism destroyed the lifes of so many people. We were really said for some time after the visit, learning all those things. A nice place to visit if you want to know more about people from Maramureș (and more) that suffered... More

I was amazed by this museum! Standing on the ground of so much history... It used to be communist jail from the late 40's to mid 50's, where many of the academics, actors, students, professors and notable writers were imprisoned, entire families...Many of these people ended their lives here. It is so sad walking around the place, entering the cells... More

Well documented museum in an impressive communist prison. There are a lot of rooms so if you really look to visit all the museum book a lot of time of your schedule:) We really enjoyed the visit!

Can be a moving experience to think of the unfortunate souls imprisoned for up to 10 years with no trial. Imprisoned because they were perceived as a threat to the government. The scratches on the doors, scratches on the walls, doubtfully made by tourists.... The museum employees seemed glad to see English speaking visitors and helped where ever they could.

If you like poster boards this is the place. An earnest attempt to present a sordid past but a failure to effectively communicate with visitors minimises impact.

This is one impressive museum of pain and suffering, put together with such attention to detail and care to tell the story of a far too recent history that we re forgetting too quickly. It is most touching to those that were adults at the time but even as a young teen during the end of the communist era, I... More

This museum is not for everyone...the stories are heartrending and the facts paint a very cruel picture of humanity. But its the truth. So everyone and not just Romanians should visit this museum for a closer understanding of humanity and not just history. This has details of the items in use during the communist period, a list of people who... More
