Not the most comfortable theater BUT not to be missed, especialy if you can get there on a Friday or Saturday night when the organ player is there (call ahead to make sure); what a treat! The movies are on their way out of town but only $1.99 and it's worth that just to get inside and look around at... More

So few places are left in America like the Byrd. Where else can you go to movies for less than $5. Complete with the amazing architecture of the old grand movie palaces of the 1920's and 30's. If you can -do not miss the Saturday movies ,,complete with the amazing Wurlitzer Organ rising up before the show and the audience... More

This is one of the last great movie palaces and takes you back in time. It's somewhat run down now but it takes little imagination to visualize past grandeur. The seats are somewhat uncomfortable but you don't care. The experience is uplifting and reminds you of days gone by. I remember 50 years ago when Iwas a child and my... More

So you've seen a movie recently and you didn't quite get the full picture the first time, or you had to visit the necessary at a crucial, plot turning moment. You don't want to hash out another 12 bucks to see it again, and you'll probably miss the power of the scene on your 32 inch flat screen, plus you... More

I love this theater. I take my kids every chance I get. It's a bit shabby, a tad over worn in but, I wouldn't change a thing. You just don't find theaters like this anymore. It takes you back in time to an era when going to the picture show was a classy affair. It sings of the roaring 20’s... More

We attended a showing of Epic on 7/14. The staff at the Byrd were very nice and helpful. Their Popcorn is very good - among the best I've had at a theater. However, the seats are so dirty and uncomfortable it makes for a long and miserable viewing experience. My back was killing me by the end of the movie.... More

My husband and I did a "cheap" date night so went to Capital Coffee and then to the beautiful, historic BYRD THEATRE in Carytown to see "42" an amzing film about the life of baseball great Jackie Jefferson Robinson. There was a great audience and it was a really nice evening......LOVE the BYRD!! Thanks for a place ALL can afford!!

My wife and I decided to see the movie Django Unchained since it only cost us less than $2 each for tickets. Byrd theater has alot of history and the decorations are well crafted. Inside you can tell the craftsmanship of the decor. The only downside is the seats which are very uncomfortable and the air quality. I believe that... More

Dad started bringing us here ever since we were little. He said it was a great date place in the 1980s. By the looks of all the couples waiting in line down Cary Street, times haven't changed very much. Do you know what a Wurlitzer organ is? The giant beauties are the best organs ever. If in Richmond on a... More

The Byrd was built during the era of movie palaces in the 1920's. It is a fantastically ornate, gorgeously decorated example of a time when films were associated with opulence. If ever you tire of grubby shopping mall cineplexes, take in a flick at the Byrd if only to remind you that perhaps social progress is not inevitable.
