This small museum was the starting point for our tour of certain battlefields in Richmond. We knew through muster rolls that several ancestors had been treated and died at Chimborazo Hospital 5. I had thought that all the hospitals had been on the hill. The...More

Our 4th graders were boning up on their Virginia history. There were no original buildings from the Civil War hospital but the visitor center was nice, had a good history film, and the grounds were a perfect place to picnic. Kids did a Junior Ranger...More

Very nice collection of Civil War era surgical instruments and displays of photos and techniques. Anyone with an interest in this part of history should know the results of the battles and the tragic work of trying to keep people alive.

A 17 minute film outlines medical treatment during the Civil War. This Confederate hospital treated tens of thousands of soldiers. With only a 20% death rate, remarkable for its time, many lived to return home and begin to rebuild the south. A small display furthers...More

Wow this place served the wounded in the civil war in massive scale. This parks size is giant and so was this hospital. Sad stories of the horrors of war.

Size is no indication of quality...so true here at Chimborazo. A small facility (parking on the street outside) with a great film and a fascinating insight on the Civil War period. Rather than the usual gun-fight battle approach of War facilities this is an intriguing...More

This is a small museum but very neat and informative. The movie was interesting and all the items were really neat to see. There is a nice gift shop with lots of books to choose from. Worth a visit.

This museum is off in a residential neighborhood and is worth finding. This site is operated by the National Park Service and while small, is very informative. After viewing the medical technology of the day and reading about their methods, you come away with a...More

I found this interesting as a physician, but the site is quite small - just a few rooms in a building that was not part of the hospital - it is a newer building. Interestingly, nothing survives from the hospital. I agree with others that...More

The Park Service has uniformed employees at Chimborazo that may be able to assist you. Maybe someone at the Virginia Historical Society on the Boulevard in the Museum District can answer your question. Or try the Library of... More
