About
Skogar Museum, in Skogar, Southern Iceland, is a cultural heritage collection of 15,000 artifacts exhibited in 3 museums and 6 historical buildings. It's one minute from Skogar Waterfall, just off Ring Road 1. Skogar Museum is open 365 days of the year, and we look forward to your visit! Hours: June, July, August 9:00-18:00, September through May 10:00-17:00. The Folk Museum includes agricultural and fishery tools, boats and maritime gear, textiles and costumes, musical instruments, rare books and manuscripts, natural history, and fascinating Icelandic curiousities. The Open Air Museum includes a traditional turf farmstead, a 19th century gabled farm home, a home crafted from ship wrecked driftwood, a multi denominational church assembled from 16 regional churches, and of course a miniature turf home for elves. The Transport and Communications Museums document technologies transforming rural south coast farmsteads into a network of modern communities, with an exemplary collection of automobiles, trucks, highway machinery, telecommunication, radio, and rescue team equipment used over the last century.

Small museum with a big impact
I was impressed by the sod buildings and other reconstructions. I wasn't aware beforehand that the museum has quite an extensive collection. Much more than I expected with artifacts from different aspects of life in the area. The adjoining cafe called Freya was excellent. Food was delicious, beautifully prepared and it felt like we were at a tea party.

Learn how folks lived in days past...a true collection of Icelandic history
One of our Nordic Visitor stops. The amount of items in this museum is astounding, on top of a real fishing boat sitting in the middle of one room. Multiple sections in this museum - you can customize which parts you want to see based on your time. We did a thorough tour of the Iceland village houses in order to get a real feeling as to how people lived. We ran out of time but will make this another stop when we return.

    Fascinating
This museum visit was not planned but we found we had a morning free so went. No regrets. We could only stay for 2 hours but it was so full and there was so much to see and do that we could have spent longer. The insight into life in Iceland through the last 200 years was both informative and interesting.

    More than you can imagine
We had no idea about the size and scope of this museum. We thought it would be a quick visit, but there was so much to see. The main building has 3 floor of artifacts and exhibits to view. Then you go outside to see several reconstructed buildings from the past showing what life was like years ago. There are houses, a church, a school and other buildings to explore. They are well maintained and fascinating to see. But there's more! In the back, there is yet another large building that holds transportation and technology exhibits. It's interesting to see the change and progress over time. There's even a fancy cafe. All in all, we were very pleasantly surprised. This is a fine museum.

Cute museum - the homes and artifacts give a great insight into Iceland's history
Cute museum and more here than we thought! We came at the end of the day and honestly ran out of time. We could have easily spent 2-3 hours here (only had 1 hour) as there is a ton of artefacts to see. Would recommend if you have time to stop here and see how Icelander's used to live and how the land was settled. Plentiful parking (free) and not too crowded.

This place is great! They have a number of turf and other old homes which were moved to the site and reconstructed. Transport museum is very cool. I wasn’t going to go in to that part, but I’m glad I did. Lots of neat exhibits with old vehicles, planes and info on ICE-SAR along with old saddles and such. The folk museum was neat, but I wish the items exhibited were presented with more information. I was particularly interested in the craft items. They had one loom and a wide array of spinning wheels, but essentially no information was presented about the items. This museum is very close to a Skógafoss waterfall and worth a visit if you have some time.

I learned a lot at the Skogar museum. It is a very informative and detailed museum about the daily live in the early days, about transportation and communication. It is an extensive museum, both inside and outside. Certainly worth a visit.

This is a hidden gem and very worthwhile to visit. The entry fee is ISK 2500 and gives you admission to the indoor historical museum, the open air museum (a must!) and the more modern museum. There’s a nice cafe at the end which served us a nice tea and cake, good on a wet day.

Nice fishing and technology history of Iceland. the outdoor exhibits of housing over time shows how much change there has been in Iceland and the harsh conditions in normal life and then with Volcanic activity. A hidden gem in the museum is the stuffed and skeletal animals in the basement showing the types of wildlife in Iceland

The area around the waterfalls is crowded, but a little ways from lies this large and good museum. It is virtually unvisited. Other museums in Iceland concentrate on the early history of Iceland, but the huge collection of artifacts here is from the eighteenth century Iceland till the present is probably unmatched anywhere. Well laid out buy subject it is found both inside, in several buildings and floors, and outside. There are actual buildings form several time periods. I strongly recommend visiting it

This very modern folk museum, in the village next to Skógafoss, is well worth at least an hour of your time, offering a range of day-to-day and craft items from down the years, and the stories to go with them. Turf houses and cafe too. Very friendly and helpful staff, and some very affordable souveniers.

Skipped Skogafoss waterfall because of the crowds and visited folk museum and Kvernufoss waterfall instead. The folk museum was packed with lots of interesting items that demonstrate how resourceful the Icelandic people have been over the centuries. Highlight for me were the sod buildings that had been moved to the museum.

We visited the museum after walking to the top of the falls as the rain was torrential and too wet to go further. We did not expect much, but it was wonderful. It is definitely making a detour to go and see. So much about the history and customs of an Icelandic town, with exhibits ranging from amazing fabrics to a section on transport and early snowmobile. Everything you need to know about saddles (much more interesting than you may think,,,) and about fishing. There are also buildings outside which you can go into (school, Church, barns) and some wonderfully interesting houses, including turf houses, Do not miss!

The museum is next to Skogafoss waterfall and was surprisingly quiet when we visited. For us, the highlights were the recreated houses in the open air museum which you could go in and the 15 minute walk to Kverufoss waterfall.

The waterfall path is signposted from the bottom corner of the car park (near the technical museum) and is an undulating gravel path. The waterfall itself is beautiful, despite being less spectacular than Skogafoss. A great bonus is its easy to walk behind the waterfall and we were fortunate to see rainbows across the falls when we visited.

The cafe in the museum wasn’t quite what we were expecting, serving ‘sit down’ meals rather than sandwiches etc but was very good.
