About
Learn about farm life in Iceland at Fridheimar, where the star of the show is tomatoes. The farm harnesses geothermal energy and uses artificial lights and a climate-control system to grow tomatoes and other vegetables all year round. Seize the chance to eat in the greenhouse alongside four different varieties of tomato plants. You'll get to try tomato soup, tomato ice cream, and even tomato beer. In the summer months, you can also check out the horse show, and meet the horses at the stable. Fridheimar is often visited together with a Golden Circle tour from Reykjavik. – Tripadvisor

    Tomato heaven
We wanted to try this restaurant due to the reviews we had seen and it did not disappoint. The homemade bread is amazing and plenty of it. The tomato soup is delicious and we also had the pasta and the burrata salad. It was lovely and generous portions. Also fascinating to see how the tomatoes are grown nd the bees that pollinate the plants.

    Tomato soup at its best
This was included in a Jet2 day excursion. Absolutely fascinating place with lovely staff who tell the story of the family business, the bees they buy in to pollinate the plants etc etc Tomatoes taste sweet and delicious. Soup was divine, served with the most beautiful homemade bread, greasy basil and sour cream. Really enjoyed it.

    Fabulous experience for Tomato lovers
We came to this restaurant after seeing the travel man TV show, it did not disappoint. You eat from a tomato based menu, I highly recommend the soup, pasta and tortillas. The restaurant is in the green house and is so unusual.

The Sweet Taste of Tomatoes at Friðheimar Tomato Farm
My memory was taken back to a wonderful place called Friðheimar when I realized I didn’t have any tomatoes for my salad tonight. You might think how are tomatoes associated with Iceland? I had the same thoughts until my visit to Friðheimar. The tomatoes are grown all year long in a greenhouse despite the cold and dark winter season. The tomatoes are pesticide free as well and the mirid bug which comes from Holland takes care of any unwanted pests. Bubble bees are also imported from Holland and pollinate the many tomato plants in the greenhouse. Friðheimar can be visited independently or with a tour company. We visited with Hidden Iceland Tours. The visit was very educational and enjoyable. We had a wonderful opportunity learning about the entire process of how tomatoes are grown. We were able to see bumble bees up close, view the beautiful tomato vines, and most importantly taste the most delicious tomatoes ever. The best part of our visit was having an opportunity to dine in the restaurant located in the greenhouse. If you are a lover of all things tomato (especially tomato soup) you have found an amazing gem at Friðheimar. The tomato soup was absolutely delicious! There was even fresh basil at the table that you could add to your soup. Let’s not mention the delicious bread that was served with the soup. I assure you that one piece is simply not enough. I am guilty of overindulge and so I ate three pieces without any apologies. A visit to Friðheimar is what dreams are made of. One might think that tomato soup and bread are not enough to satisfy one’s palate; however, one taste of a Friðheimar tomato will change you. I miss so many things about Iceland however, tonight as I prepare for dinner without tomatoes I am reminded of Friðheimar, a place where the taste of sweet vine ripened tomatoes are so delicious that the memories are unforgettable. If you plan to visit Iceland make sure that Friðheimar is on your to do list while visiting the land of fire and ice.

Unforgettable. deliciously fresh, healthy and flavourful food, venue and fascinating story. Staff made the meal into an experience with the friendly introduction and backstory. Eating in a warm greenhouse surrounded by tomatoes in subzero temperatures was an experiences not to be missed. A must visit!

    Fantastic Tomato Times
Came here as part of a group tour with EastWest and was blown away by the food at the Wine Bar. We had tomato soup and a cheese plate, along with a Bloody Mary and it was fantastic. The setting was gorgeous, the staff were really knowledgeable about the menu and provided gluten free bread with the soup. Would highly recommend.

Lunch stop - delicious novelty in Iceland
Had this on my list as stops during our vacation after seeing it on a Youtube video of visiting Golden Circle. Curious as everything was shown as fresh. Experience is really great despite it feeling touristy with all the bus and tour groups coming through. Wait staff is top notch, they do a speech on the whys and hows of the tomatoes and herbs grown there for the menu and also to be sold throughout the country. We had the soup and a cheese skewer, soup was excellent, so was the bread. Espresso tonic was so good with the tomato flavor addition. The apple/green tomato desseret was excellent along with the presentation in a clay pot. Recommend the sorbets also, really refreshing ending to the meal.

    A wonderful experience
Had made reservations for lunch and horse visit online. Beautiful space to have a meal. We ate tomato soup and olive bread which were delicious. Then we shared heirloom tomato and burrata. They had a basil plant on the table with small scissors to clip some to add to your food. Great idea! Bloody Mary was very tasty. We shared tomato ice cream with 2 sauces- vanilla and green tomato and strawberry and red tomato- very good. Our waitress, Sonja, was friendly and informative. We then had a visit to the horse stables and got a demonstration of the 5 different Icelandic horse gaits. Overall, a fabulous experience.

Unique stop, even if you don't like tomatoes
I am admittedly not a big fan of tomatoes, but wanted to check this place out. Plus the rest of my family loves tomatoes. We were too late to get into the restaurant but the wine bar was open and there was almost no one there. I tried the tomato beer, which wasn't bad, but wasn't something I'd order on a regular basis. The bruschetta was ok, but the tomato soup was excellent! The atmosphere of the place was what really makes it unique with grape vines on the walls and ceiling and tomato greenhouses all around.

This was our first official stop in Iceland and it was exactly what we needed! I highly recommend making a reservation at least 2 weeks in advance because they book up quick! I emailed a week before and was told they were already booked for tables but that the bar and terrace were first come first serve. The bar was packed when we got there but we were able to order some drinks and a cup of soup (the bar serves only drinks and a cup of soup with 1 piece of bread, compared to the full restaurant where I'm assuming the bread is more buffet style). The food and drinks were fantastic, the atmosphere was great, and the bartenders were doing a great job for being incredibly swamped. I hope to return on my next trip to Iceland!

As a family of 4, we went as a complement to the Secret Lagoon. I'm convinced the only reason Fridheimer exists is to siphon off tourists visiting the Secret Lagoon as well as feeding tour buses of senior citizens who think a bowl of soup and bread is a satisfying meal.

We did not make reservations but showed up on a rainy day. Parked without a problem. Walked in and saw roomful of empty tables. The hostess greeted us by saying lunch is unavailable to us since we are without reservation. I said we were famished, won't stay long and can be done in less than 30 minutes. "NO". Instead we could stand by the bar area and order soup there. That's what we did.

We stood like idiots at a bar trying to eat 4 bowls of soup of $10 each, which was disrupting the bartender trying to serve drinks. One kind bartender was nice enough to squeeze us at a bar table so we can make room at the bar. The soup was fine, but after all it's just plain tomato soup with nothing in it. The bun and butter was a highlight.

During all this time, 80% of the dining area remained empty. The staff were all 20 somethings and disorganized. All they knew to say was you can't eat here today without a reservation. We are busy and you have to book a couple days in advance. For a pseudo-dining experience in a greenhouse? Give me a break.

The greenhouse takes great pride in explaining how cutting edge and important their facility is. Having a greenhouse background from Canada, where I've regularly worked with facilities that are 10's of acres in scale, I found it surprising that Fridheimer was only 11,000 square feet large! More of a scale of a hobby farm than commercial greenhouse. It seemed they grew cherry tomatoes... nothing of significance.

What I thought would be a novel experience to complement a trip to the Secret Lagoon was an eye opener in arrogance, mismanagement and poor service. Never again. Steer clear of this waste of time.

Dear JRM, It is sad to hear about your experience, as we take pride in welcoming our guests. Therefore, we emphasize to all of our guests to plan ahead and book a table in advance. That is to make sure that you have a guaranteed table at the date and time of your choice. Similar to other restaurants that use reservations, we are not able to give away tables that are reserved for guests who are just about to arrive. During the high-season we have been fully booked every day, however, we try our best to accommodate as many guests without reservations as we can. When we are not able to offer our guests a table, we have our bar area available. At the bar we offer our soup in a cup with bread, desserts and drinks, and guests are able to sit at the bar, enjoy and walk around the guest facilities as they please. Me and my wife decided to open up our tomato farm 12 years ago, inspired to create something special and unique, something we hope people have never tried before. So we set up a restaurant, or what we rather want to call a food experience, inside our greenhouses. The restaurant offers a simple menu - tomato based dishes from the plants which you sit beside. The main idea was to spread knowledge about the background of the food which we grow in our greenhouses and offer in the restaurant, in a sustainable and eco friendly way. Just to clear up any misunderstanding, Friðheimar greenhouses are 11,000 square meters (not square feet), where we harvest on average 2 tons of tomatoes every day, which equals to around 700 tons per year. According to Icelandic standards, Friðheimar greenhouses are not considered to be a hobby greenhouse, even though it might be elsewhere. We hope you had lovely stay in Iceland, and wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Best regards, Knútur and the Friðheimar Family

This was an impromptu return visit to Friðheimar after we'd been back to see the geysir Strokkur (watching that never gets old!) and luckily they were able to fit us in, but it's always best to pre-book. Our waiter, Julio, was just the sunniest personality you could wish for, so cheerful, friendly, enthusiastic, fun and encouraging, we loved him, he really made our visit, what an asset! Your server will tell you all about the history and processes of the greenhouses, it's truly fascinating. The guy behind the bar was also great too, cheerful, polite, efficient and friendly, what a team! The tomato soup, made from tomatoes grown right beside you, is just gorgeous, so fresh, bright and tasty, and there's a basil plant on your table for you to season it at will. The soup and hunks of glorious fresh home baked bread and butter are 'all you can eat' so both delicious and great value for money. You can jazz it up if you wish by adding skewers, veg /cheese /chicken /seafood. There are also pasta and tortillas and other things on the menu, including a surprising range of tomato based desserts too, which we didn't have room for this time but I can tell you the ice cream and crumble from a previous visit are well worth a try! We also had tomato beer and tomato tea, thumbs up for both. It won't be our last visit, that's for sure, a real gem. There is also a horse show in the summer, or in the winter a stable tour option, with a single horse demo of the 5 gaited Icelandic horse, which we did last year, brilliant.

We were surprised at the number of excellent dishes we ate in Iceland. Although lamb and fish were prevalent as we had expected, there were many other choices and cuisines available and we wondered where they got their great produce for these dishes. Some of it is imported, of course, but it turns out that Iceland uses greenhouses to grow many of their own crops. Friðheimar Greenhouse provides insight into how this is done for tomatoes.

One of the interesting aspects of our tour was the discussion of how bees are used within the greenhouse to pollinate the tomato plants. Viewing the portable beehive was pretty interesting. It was also interesting to see how they irrigate the tomatoe plants and provide nutrients to those plants.

Friðheimar also features a restaurant with tomato-based dishes and drinks. Unfortunately, we did not have time to eat in their restaurant, but we did try some of their cherry tomatoes on the short tour and they were delicious.

Dear Visitor, We thrive to share our concept with our guests so they can learn how we grow tomatoes all year around, despite Iceland’s long, dark winters, under artificial lighting in greenhouses. We use natures help to grow tomatoes and we buy bumblebees from the Netherlands to help us pollinate the flowers. The farm has abundant supplies of geothermal water, which provides heat to the greenhouses. And the pure cold water used for irrigation is from the same source as the family’s own water supply. We love to share our story with our guests and we offer a variety of delicious dishes made from our own crop. Thank you for visiting us, and we hope to see you again in Fridheimar one day! Greetings from Friðheimar!

Totally unique offering - a restaurant or at least tables set within a tomato greenhouse serving their wonderful produce. The unlimited self-service tomato soup together with some superb bread and cucumber salsa was excellent albeit expensive. The tomato ice cream served in a flower pot was unusual but very good too.

This was one of our favorite stops while touring the Golden Circle area of Iceland.  We had a lunch of tomato soup and bread at this location, took a tour of the hydroponic tomato greenhouses, and saw a presentation on Icelandic horses.  All three experiences were excellent.  After viewing Gullfoss Waterfall and Geysir, we stopped for lunch at the Friðheimar Tomato Farm.  Lunch was served in the greenhouse.  It was fortunate we had reservations because it was very crowded with groups and tourists.  The lunch included unlimited soup and an assortment of bread with butter.  Almost everyone went back for seconds.  All the food was incredibly delicious.  Many of us bought various drinks from the bar, some of which used tomatoes in various ways.  After lunch, we had an informative tour of the tomato growing operation in the greenhouses.  It was interesting and provided answers to all our questions about the operation.  Lastly, we walked to a small track and demonstration area to see a 15-minute riding demonstration of Icelandic horses.  Afterward, we were welcome to see the horses in their stable, pet them, and take photographs.  This was a delightful lunch break.  Each experience proved to be worth the investment of time.  This is a must-see break on your sightseeing around the Golden Circle.

In the geothermal area of Frudir, it is well worth a visit to this large complex of greenhouses, which grow something like a third of the tomatoes consumed in Iceland, as well as a range of other vegetables and herbs. You can walk amongst some of the greenhouses before or after a visit to the very popular restaurant or café. The café was the most expensive on our trip for an Americano, but a bargain was the kilo of excellent tomatoes for 400 ISK.

Let me preface this by saying i don't like tomato soup. But it felt wrong to come to this beautiful tomato farm and not get their signature dish. I'm glad i did, the tomato soup is incredible, along with the breads they provided. The soup and bread is all you can eat and well worth the price. We also got a seafood skewers which were succulent and delicious but the soup was the highlight. For desserts... You just got to get them. The green tomato and apple pie was served in an adorable clay pot with fresh whipped cream and a flower on top. It was nothing like I expected, it was like a normal apple pie but clearly there were green tomatoes seen throughout it. The Friðheimar sorbet was not only beautifully presented with a flower garnish but incredible. Three flavors are given for you to try; cucumber mint and lime, red tomato and basil, and green tomatoes and rosemary. My companion loved the red tomato and basil, but i loved the green tomato and rosemary which was odd considering i don't like rosemary. Our host was very helpful and gave great drink suggestions like the Happy Mary which is hands down my favorite drink now. Overall it's an amazing place with great food. Well worth the hype, but please make a reservation. You can't come in just off the street, so please be respectful and just make a reservation ahead of time.

The restaurant is in one of the greenhouses that is used to grow the various varieties of tomatoes, which is the specialty of this restaurant from tomato soup, all you can eat, with bread, to tomato ice cream. You are surrounded by the healthiest tomato plants you can imagine , having roots and stems as thick as a giant's thumb, and then some. The atmosphere is truly tropical all year around, the food is great, and the service friendly and efficient. A reservation is an absolute must as the restaurant is a bee hive of activity from opening to closing. I guarantee you will have never have seen anything like this in yiur dining experience,

We stopped at Fridheimar’s for lunch one day during our Iceland visit. First, I want to congratulate the couple who started this successful business. When you enter the greenhouse, depending on the time of the year, you can go from dead winter to mid summer. Beautiful, cherry tomato plants growing 10 feet tall and loaded with delicious red tomatoes. We were treated to a short presentation of how the farm operates all year round. We learned how they take advantage of free geothermal heat and cheap electricity (because its produces via hydro or geothermal methods) to operate grow lights. They explained how their produced is used throughout the island providing Icelanders with tasty, fresh produce. Then came the best part of the visit, we were treated to lunch. They make their own tomato soup and bread. We were offered unlimited amounts of both items. Your first impression may be, soup and bread? I have to admit I had this thought too before our visit. This is NOT the Campbell Tomato Soup I’m accustomed to. It was delicious! But the bread was even better, large slices of different types. The farm is a popular spot and can be crowed around lunch time but don’t be discouraged. This is a MUST SEE spot when visiting Iceland. Now, I only wish I could get their soup here in the US.
