Driving up to the hot springs it looked really large but when you are there it is small. Yellowstone is much more impressive. There is a really nice walk way to view but a previous walkway is till they’re broken down and in the hot springs which takes away the beauty. Why did they not remove this. But a nice walk and yiu can choose to walk all the way to the lighthouse or drive to to it.

We visited the hot springs in February 2023. It is easy to drive to from Reykjavik, just check the weather/road conditions beforehand if you are visiting in the winter. Most of the grounds were snow covered but you could smell and see the hot spring and steam coming off of it. A nice, free experience!

A wonderful place where hot springs come to the surface in the form of mini geysers. We were there in the winter, in minus temperatures, so the bursting water vapor froze and settled in the area. Beautiful! In the distance, the Reykjanes lighthouse and a modern thermal power plant.

We rented a car and drove to the springs. The ride was easy, even at 3:00 am in the rain. We had planned on going to the blue lagoon but the flight was delayed and the lagoon was closed.
Plan B was still fun. We drove by a few light houses, stopped at the beach and did some walking on Mars?? Check out Iceland meets space.

A really impressive place to stop and see such a fantastic sight. We took a drive down the coast and stopped to take some pics and have a nosy. Our little girl was so excited. You don’t need long but it’s a must see.

This was a little stop, you don't need much time here in my opinion. Interesting to see the different colours of the landscape and the water spouting. There's a little walk if you fancy it to get other perspectives, but you can equally just have a look from the viewing platform just up from the car park. There's a plaque there that explains the alleged legend associated with this landmark. Parking is free too.

It was our first geothermal area ever, so it made an impression. It's close by Reykjavik and the Blue Lagoon and it's easily combined with some other sights around the area. Iceland has much bigger and more beautiful areas like this (e.g. Geysir), so if you plan to travel further then this is not necessarily a must see.

This is an absolute must. We went there and we want to go back. The hot springs are amazing. The views are awesome and the staff is extremely courteous. We were debating whether going to Blue Lagoon or this one and we were advised to go here because the other one is very touristy.

We visited the Geysir as part of the Golden Circle tour, unfortunately we only had about 40 minutes which we didn’t feel like was long enough. We spent a fair amount of time in the gift shop but I’d advise to save and make the most of your time watching the hot springs as gift shops in Reykjavic all sell the same things and a bit cheaper too.
If it’s a windy day be clever about where you stand when the geysir goes off as it’s extremely hot water.
We managed to see it erupt three times in the time we had (the first time it made me jump as I wasn’t expecting it!) And you can get some really cool videos, I captured it in slo-mo on my Iphone XS which made me feel like a pro photographer as the result was great and everybody loved it!
It was amazing to watch and definitely worth a visit, you don’t need to spend more than an hour and a half there depending on whether you’re having food or not.
Allt það besta!

On Google Maps there is the "Gunnuhver Volcano" near the hot springs and sharing a parking lot with it, and pictures of tourists visiting the crater, but I don't see anything on Tripadvisor about the Gunnuhver Volcano. Can anyone tell me about it? I'm only stopping over for 11 hours, so it would be the only volcano I get to visit.

Hi We are arriving in Iceland @6am on the 14th January en route to London. We have a12Hr stop over & would like to visit some Hot Springs. The Blue Lagoon looks too touristy not to mention expensive. How easy is it to get to Gunnuhver Hot Springs & do you supply towels, Restaurant? Is there public transport from the Airport or what might a Taxi cost? Thank you for any information you can provide. Nick

Directions to hot springs from International Airport. Cost to enter spa

These are a totally different hot springs down on the southern peninsula (impossible to bathe in).
I believe you are thinking of the Blue Lagoon. Shuttle buses run frequently from the airport. Just Google Blue Lagoon Iceland and a mound of info will be at your disposal. 😊

LOST AND FOUND
Were YOU visiting Gunnuhver early in the morning February 27, 2018? A group of 3 or 4 ladies may have lost a case with camera cards. We would love to get the cards back to their owners!

¿Cómo se puede ir hasta alli por libre, desde Reikiavik?
Written 3 February 2018
Lo que te comenta mafergas: puedes ir con un tour privado o alquilar un coche. Visita distintas webs.

The cost of an individual entry ticket. There are 4 of us visiting in May and we have our own transport to get there.

yes, free! You can do Ísland very expensive or spend almost no money on excursions by visiting places like this. Be sure to check out the Visit Reykjanes website.

Can you get here with public transport at all? We are staying in Grindavik with no car but would like to visit the springs.

Hi bobandsheila
It depends on the time of year you will be in Iceland. If Jun-Sep/Oct, I'd definitely recommend renting a car, it's hard to get lost and you can get out and enjoy the scenery so much easier. I just got back from a January visit and had no issues driving out in a 4wd SUV, roads had some light snow coverage, but were in good shape (not a guarantee though, we were lucky).
However, if your there in off season, or just don't want to drive, you can book a Reykanes Peninsula tour with an operator. All the offerings I've read for this tour itinerary include Gunnuhver as well as the lighthouse (walkable distance and makes for great photos with the hot springs in foreground), the bridge between two continents, a church & cemetery, as well as other area volcanos and such.
You can just look up local tour operators in Grindivik, Keflavik, or the larger operators out of Reykjavik. You could ask your hotel also, to see if they have a recommendation to get you out to Gunnuhver. If you look at my reviews for Keflavik, I reviewed a local tour operator who provided us an excellent tour a couple years ago, he still has top notch reviews.

Okay this might be a dumb question but can you visit the Springs during the Winter? Thanks
Written 9 December 2016
Yes, you can. I did it!! You just need good warm winter clothes and a car, preferably 4x4, because once you get the road to the springs is gravel. We were lucky because there's no snow in the area and the temperature was very good (45F).

Travelling in mid August next year - arriving in Keflavik and first night near Selfoss. Renting mid-size car (not 4x4). Thinking of starting our Iceland experience by visiting one of the geothermal areas enroute to Selfoss. We will continue driving 12 days around the island so will likely experience geothermal areas near Lake Myvatn as well. Any recommendations on whether to stop at Gunnuhver, Seltun in addition to or instead of Lake Myvatn sites? We would like to take into consideration road conditions to any of these sites.
Written 10 November 2016
Every stop is worth it in Iceland. The roads are pretty good, the signs and directions not so much. the distances are not great and you can do a lot in 12 days.
I would recommend the portable hot spot Internet that some car rental companies offer. you pay a little extra but Google is a better navigator that the actual GPS. You can save yourselves a lot of time if you have proper directions.
