Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I love this place it’s a great place to go fishing. My son and my daughter-in-law and I go fishing here quite a bit and I absolutely love this little spot to go fishing! If you are ever in the Anchorage area and you want to go fishing come on down to ship creek because it is a great place. They have bathrooms and the water if you go at the time that the high tide is going out or coming in it is a great place for fishing. Teens and young kids and everyone can go fishing!

We stopped here hoping to see a lot of fish. We didn’t, and the water was hard to see through. There were many people in the water fishing, but I didn’t see anyone but one person catch anything. It was interesting watching him cut up the fish. He was friendly, and it was by far the most interesting thing going on there. Next time I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit.

For being right close to downtown and walking distance from a lot of hotels, this is a fun place to check out to still get a feeling of being in nature a little bit. There’s a 30 minute free parking area in front of The Bridge, so you can scope it out before deciding to pay and stay for longer parking. There is a nice paved pathway and a fully handicap accessible fishing platform, or you can take some of the various foot paths that snake along the river bank. The river is spinning rod and fly rod compatible, and I noticed a fishing gear rental spot right across the bridge from the parking lot. Not many cities you can stay downtown and walk 10 minutes to fly fishing spot where you can rent gear and do the activity right there.

We had a half day to spend in Anchorage before we heard to Seward. My son took us to this popular local fishing spot. While we were there, there were tourists like us were exploring the place. We saw more than just fishermen. There were even some ducks and seagulls. I guess they were waiting for the fishermen to clean and gut their catch. Some parts of the creek were not deep. I can even see the fish swimming. That was a nice place to visit. Happy Travelling!

Our group really enjoyed hanging out at the Ship Creek Overlook. We could watch the fishermen casting, walk around the bridge and viewing platform, and check out the dam. It's a neat place to explore if you have some free time for 10-15 minutes. To access the Ship Creek Overlook from downtown, take E street north from West 3rd Ave. After E Street turns into North C Street and crosses a bridge over the river, take a right onto Whitney Street. Drive about 1 mile to the parking area adjacent to the Ship Creek Overlook.

In town, a multitude of fishermen fish for salmon. From the bridge we have an excellent view of their activity. Once the fishing is finished, they come and empty it on deck.
Definitely worth the detour.

We happened to be driving through one day when the Belugas were catching salmon right at the mouth of the creek where it empties into the Gulf. What an amazing sight!

It's a bit of a walk or a bit of a drive to get there. The salmon were running when we we there (August) - I'm not sure what there is to see when they aren't! In essence there is a muddy creek and a weir, a small shop making a fortune selling fishing gear, a rather good looking restaurant (The Bridge - great looking seafood) that we didn't try, and many dozens of men fishing. There were plenty of fish but none being caught while we were there! If you're going to see salmon elsewhere on your trip you won't find this very much but it's still worth an hour if you're at a loose end in Anchorage. I think if we went back we'd reserve a table at The Bridge restaurant and have a wander around before or after eating.

We had 2 days in Anchorage after our cruise and heard about the fishing here at Ship Creek which is just a few blocks walking distance from our hotel. We headed over there and down the hill by Earthquake Park off Avenue C. We found a dozen people there fishing for Silver Salmon. You could see the big fish swimming around and while there we watched 2 get caught and another 2 dropped in 15-20 minutes. There is a shack there that rents all fishing gear including waders for around $30. They have a filet station and grill there to cook them if you'd like. The secret is you have to fish around high tide, hour before and hour after. The tides in Alaska are huge and creek empties at low tide and turns into a big muddy mess. But for some quick fun without having to travel somewhere, thats a great place to go. There is also a bar and restaurant right there sitting over the creek.

Ship Creek is a SUMMER attraction. Ship Creek features combat salmon fishing beginning in May (King Salmon) and, as Alaska Fish and Game permits, on into July. Then the Silver Salmon arrive in late-July and this fishing season can run on into September. You MUST have a State of Alaska Fishing License to fish here at Ship Creek during the fishing season(s) from May into September.
