The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level.  Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway.  Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike.

This park not only highlights the locks, but has an idyllic strolling garden. The whole place is reminiscent of what a park would look like in the Victorian age. An excellent place for a casual walk.

Great place to see boats going from salt water to fresh up close and personal! Great for kids and adults alike. Take a picnic and enjoy in its park like setting or try one of the nearby fish and chip stands. Also a great place to go when the salmon are running and see them as they make their way... More

Bring the kids for a free Washington special attraction - the locks! Watching them flood a section, or drop the level, and then open the locks - the process is fun to watch. They also have an on-site movie (also free) to explain some of the history. Come when the salmon are running for extra fun - they have glass... More

Enjoy the Beauty of old time maritime vessels and new as they move threw the mechanics of the locks in old time Ballard , Washington. Attend a summer picnic and grab a fish sandwich at a nearby fish shack for a refreshing, easy afternoon or morning along the canal.

We were looking for an interesting plcae to take our teen age children without having to spend an exorbitant entry fee. And we found it right in the center of Seattle! The locks are a testament to human ingenuity. It is entertaining as well as educational. We followed a few boats as they made their way thru the locks. It... More

This is the place to take Grandpa when he's visiting from someplace else. Watching the engineers situate all the boats in the locks and the rising and lowering of the water is so much fun and so interesting! And when the salmon are running, one can get a close up look via the ladder underneath the locks. The landscape is... More

Hard to believe a location with this much variety and nature could be free. If they charged @20 admission, it would be a value!

This is a cool place to spend a few minutes or hours, depending on which boats/ships are passing through the locks, and whether the salmon are passing through the ladder.

The locks are a wonderful place to visit. If you enjoy boats, you can enjoy hours of watching as they pass through the locks. Nearby are the fish ladders, which are also fascinating. And the adjacent gardens are a pleasure, especially on a warm, sunny day.
