    Nice to visit once
The permanent exhibit is a bit all over the place and, frankly, I did not bother to really look at everything. The Hokusai exhibit was superb. I love Japanese wood block prints and seeing the originals was really a highlight. As others have stated, it is an "okay" museum. But definitely worth going once or when something nice comes to town.

Very nice for a last day activity.
My boyfriend and I went here on our final day in Seattle and it was a pleasant experience. We are no experts of fine art, but the exhibits were varied, interesting and taught you a bit about different cultures and time periods if you take the time to view and read the descriptions. We spent about 1.5 hours and overall would recommend, but I can see it not being for everyone. There was a screaming exhibit that was a bit distracting at times, especially when we were taking all the art in.

    Outstanding
We spent a delightful two hours touring the SAM’s collections. It’s a beautiful museum, the collections are nicely organized and flow one to another. We particularly enjoyed the art by indigenous artists, including fabric arts and mixed media. The Calder exhibit defies description. The collection includes many pieces from earlier an ancient time periods.

    Excellent gallery in downtown Seattle
A welcoming art gallery and museum with exhibits very old and very new, with plenty in between. It seems the British Museum wasn't the only institution to take ancient artifacts into safe keeping. Excellent gallery of American art, old and new. Lots of modern art too, some not my taste, but there you go. Lots more to see.

So amazing, but wear comfy shoes!
This was one of the things we specifically wanted to see during our recent 3 day trip to Seattle. Tickets were $3 cheaper if you bought them ahead of time, but it was still $29.99 for an adult, and $19.99 for a student. They did have some discount tickets, like the City pass and reciprocal memberships, so it's worth looking into those. They currently have exhibits on the 3rd & 4th floors, and there's so much to see. My favorite was the Calder in Motion, which was on the 3rd floor. However, I think I would have started on the 4th floor as there was more traditional art -- 3rd floor was mostly contemporary and modern art. They also have a cafe, gift shop and free coat check, so you don't have to carry around a bulky coat or backpack. Just wish we'd had more time...

    Surprised a excellent collection
I was surprised in how great this museum was. The collection while small still took me 2 hours to wander through. The presentation of the collections was very modern . Check out the porcelain room. Small collections of Roman, Greek and Egyptian . A whole room with a video and great collection of Australian Aboriginal Art. A very vibrant well presented art collection. Well worth the visit.

    Northwest native art a highlight
Good display of Northwest Native American artifacts and art. Lots of African masks. Quite a bit of modern art featuring a couple of artists whose names I don't recall. Overall a very worthwhile visit.

Interesting museum with plenty of variety
Wow 😮, several floors jam packed with artifacts, paintings, Porcelain and contemporary art. Expect to spend 2-3 hours exploring. We would not describe ourselves as art lovers but we really enjoyed the variety of items on display. Around $30 per person But FREE on the first Thursday of the month 👍

    Some Interesting Art but Pricey
The museum is rather small with a focus on modern art. The exhibits are on the 3rd and 4th floors. I liked the West Coast Funk Art exhibit a great deal. I had never heard of that style and found it very interesting. The rest of the art was a mixed bag for me. Absent the Funk exhibit I would have been disappointed with the museum. I thought the cost of admission was way too high @ approximately $30 each. I wouldn’t view this as a “must see” sight but fans of modern art will probably enjoy it.

Excellent unique Museum with Nice Cafe
Very nice, well laid out museum with unique pieces. Great Calder exhibit, plus modern African art, and indigenous art . There is also a great Tree sculpture in the lobby. I also enjoyed the cafe downstairs. (Get the lobster roll, not the crab roll, which was fried).

I spent a few days in Seattle in September 2020 and was excited that the Seattle Art Museum re-opened to visitors shortly prior to my trip. They require reservations; the ticket-buying process was very easy on their website. They were being diligent about all protocols, and it was pretty easy to maintain social distancing in the galleries.

I enjoyed the collection a lot. The modernism collection was quite good, with a nice mix of painting and photography. There’s a gallery of Aboriginal Australian art that’s worth visiting; it features several works by one artist whose story was really interesting. There’s also a really great gallery featuring art from populations indigenous to the Seattle region that was very educational. I was quite taken with the museum’s superb collection of African art, including a mask collection that is beautiful and most effectively displayed.

The museum’s relatively small size made it easy to navigate in a few hours. Absolutely worth the price of admission.

Like many great galleries and museums this one is no exception in the fact you could likely visit many times and see something new. We spent the afternoon here and even without a special exhibit couldn’t really take everything in. The building is large and the art is generously spread over two floors. Art is clustered around themes or time periods in discrete rooms that are large and airy and spacious. Favourite spaces for me included the modern art, the Indigenous artifacts and the porcelain room. I really appreciated the SAM’s admission policy which makes art accessible to everyone. We easily used public transportation to visit the SAM as it is right downtown and parking and traffic can be stressful. The website is very informative and easy to navigate.

Really excellent museum - I was there for the "Flesh and Blood: Italian Masterpieces" exhibit which did not disappoint. There were several gorgeous pieces including at least two by El Greco and a few Titians. I made a point to visit the Native American collection ass I had read positive reviews about it. Interestingly for me, I thoroughly enjoyed the Dorothy Napangardi exhibit that was just a small hall behind/adjacent to the Native American exhibit. I had never seen her work before. There were also several good contemporary pieces, I really loved the Knight/Lawrence Gallery's showing of Aaron Fowler's work.

Friends came from Portland and we went as it was rainy and enjoyed their beautiful exhibits of Seattle. Easy to walk around, educational on Seattle, kid friendly, very worthwhile to visit. Cafe had exceptional delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and a lovely view of the Lake.

We booked our timed tickets as soon as the museum reopened. It was so good to be there after so many months! We wanted to see Georgia O'Keeffe's exhibit, but the museum was closed during that time. We however had so many other exhibits to see, and there were very few people admitted. The gift shop was open, and we purchased a book about the life of Georgia O'Keeffe and a CD. The cafe was not open.

This fabulous art museum (not to be confused with the Seattle Asian Art Museum which is also gorgeous but a separate museum) has a large collection of art from around the world, from African art to ancient Mediterranean art to Australian Aboriginal art. Everything is well-curated, and the whole vibe of the museum encourages contemplation of the art at your own pace. You could easily spend a big chunk of your day here, so thankfully there's a good cafe to get drinks afterwards. I've been here a few times, and every time I see something else I'd not seen on earlier visits.

SAM's small and thus very manageable Monet at "Etretat" exhibit is beautifully presented. Entry is carefully controlled and while a number of people visited when we did, it felt safe. Masks are required. Try to go mid week if possible to avoid the largest number of visitors. The excellent exhibition catalogue is available in the museum shop and offers welcome insights into this period in Monet's life / career.

Jacob Lawrence' "The Struggle" exhibition was well worth the time. SAM did a terrific job with descriptions and providing context for each of the works. An added bonus was Seattle was the first stop on the tour to include the two most recently discovered paintings which originally were part of the work. SAM also included other more contemporary African American artists who work in different mediums.

It is not fair to compare but since I have been to the best art museums in the world from New York to Amsterdam not much could live up to that and this one does not. We walked in and and got tickets. Going towards the escalator we were accosted by a young woman with a walking stick shouting to ask us if we had any food or drink. Both of us were wearing sundresses and carrying small pocket books so I’m not sure where she thought we might be hiding pizza slices. Weird. I think the policy should be to say nothing unless a person is walking in with a coffee in hand or a burger shoved in their face. “Welcome” would be nice. The exhibits were average. There was a Giacometti exhibit you had to pay extra for but we have seen many Giacomettis so did not spend more to see this one. I personally would prefer to pay one higher fee up front to see the entire museum. It is tacky having exhibits off limits.

We really enjoyed the varied section of this museum. There were sections on Ancient Greek/Roman/Egyptian art, Islamic art, African, Asian, Aborigine, and Native American/Northwest art, as well as Abstract Art, Classical European Art, Modern Art, and Impressionist Art. Downstairs there was s reception. showing local artists' work, and I learn that you can even RENT certain art pieces from SAM. A lovely gift shop with products from local artists as well. If I was a Seattle resident, I'd become a member. If I come back to Seattle, I'll try to visit again!
