Mauna Kea Summit Adventures offers daily trips to the summit of Mauna Kea...

Mauna Kea Summit Adventures offers daily trips to the summit of Mauna Kea for sunset and stargazing. We are the pioneer service of this kind and we have over 30 years of experience. Our daily trip starts off on the Kona coast 4 hours before sunset and returns 5 hours after sunset. We travel in custom built 4x4 mini coaches with panoramic windows. Our guides are experts in island geography, geology, culture and astronomy. At the 9,000FT.level, we stop for the better part of an hour to dine and experience the visitor's center. We arrive on the summit before sunset and we stay until the best of the color has faded. Afterward, if natural conditions allow, we put on a highly informative stargazing session with large, computerized amateur telescopes.

MKSA does not guarantee the weather in any way. Although the mountain enjoys a great majority of fine weather there is the possibility the tour may be canceled, and refunded or may encounter poor conditions in the field.

Despite being a proponent of the idea that pretty much everything on Big Island bar scuba diving and a helicopter tour, can be done as self guided drives and hikes, this is a tour not to be missed. They were well organised, had a great tour bus, provided a really tasty veggie dinner, warm parka and gloves and an amazing... More

This is a once in a lifetime experience. How often do you get to be at almost 14,000ft looking down on the rest of the world? We started off with the long drive up. The van was comfortable. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and shared lots of info on the island, the lava flows, geology, interesting facts and places. He... More

Mauna Kea Summit Adventures does an amazing job. Our guide, Greg, has a masters in geology and a great deal of experience teaching astronomy. He had a wealth of information which he shared it in a way that everyone understood what we were seeing. It's extremely cold at the top and the company provided very warm jackets, gloves, and hot... It doesn't get much better than this! Both guides were very informative and helpful. They showed us many constellations with the naked eye, to include both the big dipper and the southern cross simultaneously in the sky (apparently that's rare). Through their telescopes, we saw a nebula birthing new stars, paired spiral galaxies, the jewel box grouping of different colored... More

After debating whether to drive the summit ourselves we decided to do this tour and very glad we did. Staff was super helpful on front-end, very organized. Our guide, Maka, was incredibly knowledgeable. Though not "Hawaiian" food, the lasagna was good and dinner while sun setting at the visitor's center was nice. The sunset at the peak was very cool,... Our trip to Mauna Kea was amazing! From the beginning our guide Maka was lively and fun, as well as very knowledgable during the trip and provided great recommendations for other things to do on different islands also. The equipment provided during the trip was excellent (wonderfully warm jackets and incredible quality telescopes), and we were completely blown away by... More

An activity that combines an amazing learning experience with breathtaking views! Highly recommend! Plan on spending at least 6 hours on this tour. The drive up to Mauna Kea goes by quickly as your guide narrates about the island and sites you pass on the way. The mountain views are spectacular and star tour is literally out of this world!

This tour includes a breathtaking sunset at the summit and views of the star-filled night sky, but what really makes this experience is the guides. During the entire ride to the top, GREG told our group about the island's geology and geography in a fun and engaging way. He included history about the native Hawaiians, pointed out local wildlife, and... More

We went to the Big Island of Hawaii in late April to celebrate my Birthday. We had designed this trip to see, hear, and sense the power of the Nature - from middle of the Earth (Lava) to middle of the Heavens (Stargazing)!! Our Stargazing adventure through Epic Tours was much more than we had asked for - a must... More
