This stretch of road has really been improved but could use an increase in the speed limits in many areas. Some areas are 35 MPH when they could easily be 55MPH. Scenic, nice drive.

We travelled this highway frequently in both directions. Given it is one lane only for most parts there are always some slow traffic. This is particularly painful during rush hour. Plan accordingly. Going North, there is a massove lava tube right off fhe side of the road. Spend a minute to go and see it. Requires good shoes (don't go... More

Being on this highway somehow makes you feel like you're in space! It's absolutely stunning and definitely nothing I've experienced in my life. It's tricky at night due to the lack of lighting. But during the day my face was glued to the windows in absolute awe.

Follow the old highway whenever you can just to drink in the ambience of old Hawai'i! Strongly recommended.

We were doing a bike tour around the big island and hopped onto the Old Mamalahoa Hwy whenever we could. Beautiful serene roads, very little traffic, on the Hilo side there are many bridges with raging rivers and waterfalls, lush vegetation. Near Honoka'a climbing up on the Old Mamalahoa Hwy it was pure magic, going from jungle/rain forest to massive... More

We were very impressed with the quality and smoothness of the main highways on the Big Island. The speed limit is low at times but the locals do not heed it. They drive very fast on all roads so be aware. That should not stop you from enjoying the view. We pulled over frequently in regular stopping areas to allow... More

Good road, except when stuck behind. Slow car. No place to pass easily if there is a lot of traffic coming against you.

Mamalahoa - just saying it is fun. It can get crowded and there was construction when we were there. Either grin and take the aloha spirit or turn around - or better yet stop in one of the many stores or eateries along the way. Fun in every sense of the word.
