Beautiful views

Drove across as part of a tour. Definitely plan on going back to get more pictures. Beautiful as you drive between the volcanoes. Must do in the daylight for full impact.

This room is under construction. I thought it was quite dangerous to drive this road at night. The only way from the east to the west side of the island however that doesn't take very long. Go in the daytime

Old Saddle Road (which you can still drive starting south of Waimea) was very curvy, with one lane bridges and other hazards. The new road (Daniel K. Inouye Highway - after the late Senator from Hawaii) is wide and smooth. It is the fastest and safest way to drive from the east (Kona/Waikoloa/Waimea) side of the BI to the west... More

I have to say that once you have been here for a couple days, you want to see more flowers, oceans, and beautiful palm trees! Not on Saddle Road. I felt like I was in the dessert in Palm beach or Nevada. Okay, YES lava is super cool and I loved seeing it and learning all about the different layers... More

If you are searching for a relaxing scenic drive thru mid-Big Island, saddle road is a definite way to go. Picturesque views of the countryside. U will also have the opportunity to see at 8 of many types of vegetation changes.

I have made the drive a few times, going up to the Mauna Kea Visitors Center and driving from Hilo to Kailua. The road is much improved from years ago. Smooth and fast with great views of Mauna Kea. It is worth it to take the drive to visit the other side of the island, whichever side you happen to... More

Beautiful stretch of highway across the Big Island from east to west. The terrain changes from rolling fields to black lava fields. There are various climates along the way which makes the drive enjoyable.

Impressively long drive between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea; lots of lava and lots of emptiness. You get a nice feeling for how big the Big Island is. There isn't much to do; trees are short, landscape mostly lava, small hills and the two big volcanic peaks.

I have used the Saddle road for years! The improvements are really wonderful! This could be one of the nicest roads now in the entire state. One warning! Drive the speed limit! Several speed traps! Aloha

Last time we traveled Saddle Road it was horrendous. We were surprised to see such a major upgrade has taken place. A much quicker trip to Hilo and much safer. Weather turned bad so we had to leave HIlo fairly early 1400 due to the fog etc on saddle road - would not want to drive it at night.
