Nice wide road with beautiful scenery. Took the road from Hilo to Kona. Excellent wayside with new playground about midway.

Drove saddle road from Hilo to observatory visitor center at 9200 feet. Landscape went from green fields to moonscape lava fields then dense fog. When we emerged from the clouds it was clear and the temperature dropped about 40 degrees, cold and windy, wow!

If the weather is clear, beautiful view of many years of lava flows. If misty, a fascinating drive. Scenic overlooks, drive to Mauna Kea and great road. Used it x 2 and very different each time.

Stop in Waimea and enjoy the quaint, old town. This is not quite as fast as the new highway, but gives you a better sense of old Hawaii.

Haha. Can't believe I'm reviewing a road. Took this road from Kona area to Hilo. Stopped at Mauna Kea on the way back. Only thing I wanted to say about the road is you have to stop at the "playground" rest area if you have...More

We did an all day volcano tour which ended with a night hide to where the lava met the ocean. At the end we were all tired and had a drive back to the Kailua-Kona side. It was much easier using the saddle road which...More

One of the big rental car no-nos is now a smooth, fast paved road which makes it a quick trip from one side of the Big Island to the other. It's a chance to see the interior and to visit the Ellison Onizuka Visitor Center...More

There are no cliffs and nothing that requires a guardrail. Most of the road is very straight and very wide (mostly 2 lane, with occasional passing lanes). There is a short section (4 miles?) on the downhill run into Hilo... More
