Nice wide road with beautiful scenery. Took the road from Hilo to Kona. Excellent wayside with new playground about midway.

Drove saddle road from Hilo to observatory visitor center at 9200 feet. Landscape went from green fields to moonscape lava fields then dense fog. When we emerged from the clouds it was clear and the temperature dropped about 40 degrees, cold and windy, wow!
If the weather is clear, beautiful view of many years of lava flows. If misty, a fascinating drive. Scenic overlooks, drive to Mauna Kea and great road. Used it x 2 and very different each time.

Stop in Waimea and enjoy the quaint, old town. This is not quite as fast as the new highway, but gives you a better sense of old Hawaii.
