I sat in a pew, and right below me was a hole in the floor drilled by or at the request of Father Damien so the church-goers would come to church and have a way of getting rid of their spit...rolled up banana leaf pushed...More

A lovely part of the history of Kalaupapa from the days of the leper colony. It has been restored and is very pretty and poignant.

Fantastic history. Be sure to get a guide to tell you about the history of the place. The acoustics are amazing. You will see a bust of Father Damien inside. There are apparently holes cut into the floor to allow the saliva of the leprosy...More

Other than ruins and cemeteries, St. Philomena is all that remains of the original leper colony. It is a stark reminder that there can be spiritual and physical beauty even in a terrible place. The church has two wings, one reserved for lepers, who had...More

To get to St. Philomena's you must take a guided tour of the Kalaupapa peninsula. Kalaupapa is both beautiful and quite sad considering its history. A moving place of sad history.

The church is charming. The grounds are beautiful. The site is filled with history and stories of compassion and healing. Contrary to what one bedeviled reviewer wrote, there is absolutely a part of Saint Damien interred here in his marked grave. Do the research. The...More

This is one place that we would really like to go visit again. It was so peaceful here. Father Damien's gravesite is here along with many others including Brother Dutton.

This was a beautiful church we saw while on the Damien tours. There is lots of information about the church on the informational boards outside.

This is where St. Damien served and Brother Dutton is buried. The site next door, largely unmarked, is the holy site of hundreds of patients.
