Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nice open square with good gardens. There were lots of family and kids around even late at night in August 2022, partly because of the summer holidays. If you’re in the city, you’ll no doubt pass through here at some point so take some time to look at the Mother Bulgaria statue too.

Beautiful and huge square in the center of Ruse, the 5th biggest city in Bulgaria, dominated by the soaring and grand Monument of Freedom. It is surrounded by buildings of awesome neo-baroque and neoclassical architecture, many of which are cultural monuments, that brought Ruse the nickname of "The Little Vienna" long time ago. A couple of fountains are on the square as well as some well-trimmed, manicured small gardens. You can watch the world going by from some of the benches in the shade of the trees or you can enjoy a drink or meal in some of the restaurants and cafeterias scattered along the periphery of the square.

The Wondrous Wife and I were in Bucharest visiting a son and his wife for New Years. Almost everything in Bucharest was closed for the holiday so, what the heck, we took a day trip to Rousse Bulgaria. Crossing the border was not smooth, (they were apparently surprised anyone actually wanted to come into Bulgaria) but they did let us in the country. We made our way to the main pedestrian boulevard and started walking. Well, almost everything in Rousse was also closed for the holiday. The boulevard was, however, very crowded with Bulgarians taking a walk (nothing else to do?). It was a beautiful place with great old buildings, and it goes on for many blocks. Small problem, the vendors that were open were primarily street vendors who only took levs ( Bulgarian cash) and no money exchanges were open. Various Restaurants were operating so we did have a very nice meal where a credit card could be used. I would certainly recommend visiting Rousse if you happen to be in Bucharest, (after all you get to add another country visited to your list) just don’t do it the first week in January.

All buildings surrounding the square are from after 1878 when Bulgaria liberated itself from Ottoman occupation. It is as if the newly independent nation wanted to make a statement: we are part of Europe, not longer ruled by an Islamic Sultan. Thus neo-classical style monumental buildings: little Vienna on the Danube. The statue in the middle shows a woman representing the new nation. She looks peaceful and holds a cross in her hand, on her head she proudly wears victory laurels. At her feet lions that broke the chains of the Turkish rulers.
Compared to other cities in the region, here no six lane highways with car traffic in the center, but a wonderful quiet pedestrian zone with greens trees, cafés and restaurants. Bulgaria how it used to be, still not hit by mass tourism.

Ruse is a gorgeous Bulgarian town on the right bank of the Danube. You really do feel like you are in a mini- Vienna with all the stunning Neo-Baroque and Neo- Rococo architecture. Freedom Square is a broad, pedestrianized walker's paradise with many monuments, fountains, cafes and plenty of places to sit and take in the beauty. A gorgeous square in a gorgeous city.

The city center is very beautiful and unique for Bulgaria. It is not by chance that the city is called "The Little Vienna". The statue of liberty and all the gardens, fountains and walking area are a very nice place to relax and enjoy the day.

In the middle of the city of Ruse is located Freedom Square. It is the historical centre of the city and because of that it's surrounded by neoclassical examples of architecture. The Square itself is spacious and green. In the middle is located the monument of liberty and right behind it is located the biggest fountain in the city. Next to it is located the fountain of Heracle and next to it is the round fountain. The whole square is formed as a garden and there are some rare floral species. Right next to the square are the Municipality, the theatre, the courthouse and the building of the first bank in Bulgaria. There are lots of cafes and restaurants in the area and if you want you can hire a rickshaw to go around the centre. From the both northern sides of the square starts the Aleksandrovska str., witch is one of the main boulevards in the city. There are located lots of shops and two discos, also lots of restaurants and one trade centre.

The most gorgeous square, peaceful, tidy and tranquil - on a Sunday morning. It is surrounded by an impressive array of building. Worth a visit.

A lovely place in the heart of the city, the main symbol of the town. It's a must when visiting Ruse. It's green and very relaxing and in the same time full of life. All main sights are close, as well the best restaurants in town.

Ruse is nicknamed the "little Vienna" because of its architecture and history.
This city was once even more developed compared to Sofia or Plovdiv.
It is also known the "city of the first things". During the 19th century, the first printing house was discovered, the first telegraph agency, the first railway line in Bulgaria, the first brewery - basically where the civilisation came from.

Hi is Freedom square related to the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire ?
Written 14 October 2018
Yes , but it’s build a several years later. The liberation from the Turks is 1879 y, the square I build in the beginning of XX century from Italian Architekt Arnoldo Zoki.
