About
The Museum of Roses was founded in 1984 with the help of the city's Museum of History. The exposition includes original photographs, documents and interesting items related to the rose production - the oldest Bulgarian industry. There is a display of tools used to cultivate the rose gardens, along with vessels used to store and transport rose oil. In the yard one can find authentic installations for producing rose oil from both the 19th and the 20th century.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Not really a museum. It is not free as advertised on the LP guide, 3 lev for 2,5 rooms. Two posters tell you what you need to know in the first corridor (half room), the next room shows tools and the last room - totally useless - has posters with photos of all the beauty queens!!! Avoid.
Even the boutique is miserable and you get better products near the Thracian tomb in Kazanlak.
To learn in a nicer setting about the rose production, visit the ethnographic museum in Plovdiv.

Rose and rose oil production is important to the Bulgarian economy; however this neglected, basement museum needs updating (some of the latest displays were from the 1970's). Interesting equipment shows how labor intensive rose oil production is. This is still done with steaming the rose petals with water and then condensing the steam to distill the rose oil out. Bulgaria makes over 60% of the world's rose oil. If you are in the area, it's a quick stop for 20 minutes to see this agricultural side of the country. I visited in October, but the grounds had lots of rose bushes and they were probably beautiful in June.

It was very quiet when we visited. The building has a nice modern entrance with the rose oil making history and exhibits in a circle around a garden of roses. The first exhibit I noted was a book by David Austin, a recently deceased English rose grower. The explanations were in English and easy to follow. The gardens had some very attractive roses of all types with some recognizable old varieties and a few newer ones. There was a disabled access but at certain points I would question whether it was wide enough for a wheelchair.

The park surrounding the museum with its many roses is also great to see. The museum itself is nice but not terribly well organized. The small gift shop that sold products was closed for inventory (the workers were just milling around) - just like in the communist days where the customer is always wrong.

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this beautifully presented museum with a different rose for each explanatory segment. It was also most interesting and instructive . I loved the semi circular shape of the building and the garden in the middle

The museum takes your through a circular history of the region's rose industry. They don't allow you to take any photos of the exhibits which were rather boring after the first part. You can only take photos in the garden which is in the center of the museum. The museum is small. I thought we would learn more about the cultivation of roses and the Damascena rose variety itself rather than just how the rose oil is obtained and the various uses for it. I also mistakenly thought I would learn about rose varieties from all over, not just the one variety. Kazanlak is covered in roses of all different kinds. In my mind a rose museum is a garden with all varieties of roses blooming so that you can see the different colors and smell the various scents. This museum was sterile, but it had a gift shop with very overpriced rose products.

The circular building set in a nice park must be nice in the summer with roses growing the garden in the middle. But the display was very scanty and need be improved.
The shop has a variety of rose based products but some of these products are cheaper in town hotels.

As rose oil is one of the main products exported from Bulgaria, it is interesting to know a little bit more about the industry.
This place is small and not too expensive. It's also kind of cute. If you have time and it's low season, visit it. If you can visit a distillery, it might be more interesting and interactive.
