We decided to walk around the town Mayrhofen, up the mountain, around 14:30 we started walking on a trail without destination, for the simple pleasure of exploring the region. We got a trail to Brandberg, the path had several images of saints and a chapel...More

We were in Mayrhofen in Feb, 2017, and followed noelrosie's advice to go to the Mayrhofen tourist info desk, and it was great! We described what we wanted (in this case: picturesque views, typical Austrian houses and farms, and animals), and they provided a map...More

I visited the tourist office for a map of the area and was given a small booklet of walking tours around Mayrhofen. The routes were graded as to distance and difficulty with an approximate time also given. I set out and was delighted to find...More

The trails at the top of either of the major lifts (Penkenbahn & Lammabichl) are more 'ridge' walks than up/down hikes. That said, the vistas are spectacular, especially south facing. The Penkenbahn holds 30+ people. At the top of the lift there is a circular...More

We took the Penkenbahn up to the top. All of the steepness is lower down. Once at the top the walking is pretty easy. There are many restaurants up there to take a break and have a beer and a snack. The views are worth...More

There is great walking in the Zillertal, and a good range of buses from the centre of Mayrhofen: but there are few decent trails descending into the town - you often end up wedged between roads for the last few hundred metres or so. They...More

There are many wonderful walks in and around Mayrhofen. The walk from Schlegeis Reservoir to the Italian border is very enjoyable. Take the 4102 bus from Mayrhofen to Schlegeis and the walk is a 9 mile return trip. The walk is not difficult for reasonably...More

Where do you get the laminated walking map from? This will be our first visit to Mayrhofen and I am finding it hard to get specific walk route information online. Is it easy enough once you get there to get the information in English? Thanks Ali

We got a really good set of four maps of the Zillertal area from the tourist office in Zell am Ziller about five kilometres from Mayrhofen. As it was produced by the official Zillertal organisation, I would assume it is... More

Is there someplace where we can rent hiking polls in the summer in Mayrhofen? Also are there any high mountain hiking trails that take about 4-5 hours. Would like something without steep drop-offs as I am afraid of heights.

Our Hotel in Mayrhofen supplied hiking poles free of charge. They also had a hotel mountain guide who conducted brilliant hiking tours (free of charge) I suppose that other Hotels may do that, too. There are lots of hiking... More
