Neighbourhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

This is a quick ride across the river and leaves on the hour from Algiers Point and from the city on the half hour. Clean and efficient. We bought tickets for seniors to ride all trolleys and the ferry for $0.80/day! Buy them online through the norta.com transportation site. What a bargain! You can buy different passes, some are 3-day etc.

If you have a Jazzy Pass the ferry is included.
The journey across is only 10 minutes with the ferry departing one side at 15 and 45 minutes and the other at 00 and 30.
You can go back and forth in just 25mins making a quick and cheap experience while in town.
Just don't stand up to take photos, you must remain seated!!

Our family purchased the day jazz pass and took the ferry ride across Mississippi River to Algiers point. The ferry was easy to board, well organized, very clean. You are not allowed to move about once the boat starts. It is just a short ride.

So pleasantly surprised by how timely, clean and friendly the staff were. Very impressed with adherence to schedule. Easy boarding process, very cost-efficient at $2 each way. Drops you right in front of the aquarium of America‘s in Harrah’s Casino.

What a delightful experience was this round-trip ride on a Mississippi River ferry. How fine it was to soak up the scenery from a great perspective. Riding this ferry was a fun thing to do. It dismissed the rush and slowed down time. Make it a point to kick back and take a ferryboat ride.

Buying a trolley pass gets you onto the buses and ferry. Go over to Old Algiers. It is the second oldest city. Do the jazz walk. Quaint. Lots of jazz greats on the walk. A secret discovered!

A lovely, short ride across the Mississippi.
We went from Algiers to the Riverfront. Parking lot on the side of the road.
A nice little fountain/splash pad over there.
Great view of the ships (even Carnival Cruise Ship!) and barges.
For the minimal price, it was something nice to do in the evening.

People crack me up. Complaining about $2? Do you think the Ferry runs on air? Is the Ferry pilot a volunteer worker? No.
But for two bucks you get a chance to see the skyline from the water. Great photo ops. Plus you get a moment to relax from the hustle and bustle of the Quarters. Algiers is coming along, and more will be done later. You won't pay $2 for the boat ride but you'll pay $10 for a pair of sunglasses from the French Market that fall apart an hour later? Puh-lease. Just sit on a park bench for free and quit yer whining.

We took the free ferry ride to Algiers in the late afternoon, walked around the town for a bit then took the ferry back at sunset. Algiers is a quaint little town with pretty homes seemingly untouched by Katrina. Then the ride back had wonderful views of New Orleans at sunset. You can do the whole thing - the ride over, walk around and ride back in under an hour and half. The ferry leaves the base of Canal Street at :15 and :45 then comes back from Algiers at :00 and :30. Free to walk on, $5 for your car. Grab some cafe au lait and a bag of beignet from Cafe Du Monde for the ride over and just enjoy the view!

Ferry comes by about every 30 minutes or so. The ferry is huge! It used to carry cars but it no longer does. It takes bikes and pedestrians. You will find mostly locals using this mode of transportation. It's a great way to see the skyline. there really isn't much to see on the other side at algiers. But there is a walking path along the river. But it's the best place to get that skyline shot at dusk. Chat away with the residents to learn more about life in NOLA. It is 2 dollars per person and you'll need exact change. They dont give you any change if you dont have it. You will also need to disembark if you are doing a round trip. Everyone must leave the ferry once it has docked.

Does the ferry go to two different places one along the Mississippi and one to Algiers Point. I read somewhere it did but can’t find any info on it

The ferry leaves New Orleans at the bottom of Canal St., crosses the Mississippi River to Algiers, and returns. There are two docking points, one on each side of the river.
