Top ways to experience New Orleans Botanical Gardens and nearby attractions
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Lakeview
Lakeview extends inland from the shores of Lake Pontchartrain with much of the area reserved for family-friendly City Park. Home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, and the city’s own lush Botanical Gardens, City Park is a New Orleans gem and the perfect spot for outdoor fun with as much of a mix of culture and/or amusement as you would like. Beyond City Park more great excuses to stay outside beckon, whether on land or by boat. Developed a good deal later than most other New Orleans neighborhoods, Lakeview has a distinctively different look and feel compared to other parts of the city. Fans of mid century modern design and contemporary architecture particularly enjoy leisurely drives around the residential streets of Lake Vista, Park Island and along Lakeshore Drive.

- WPLandryFairfax, Virginia590 contributionsStunning!WOW - we had no idea how extensive these gardens were. This place is amazing! On Wednesdays, residents can get enter for free. Non-residents have to pay a small fee, but it is well worth it for everything you get to experience while there. The gardens are exquisitely maintained and each area has a theme. There are lovely Japanese gardens, cacti and succulents, a kitchen garden, rose gardens, and so much more. The walking paths are well-maintained. There is a train garden with historic information and scenes from the New Orleans area. There is ample parking available at no cost. We spent hours just walking around and enjoying everything the garden has to offer. If you are a solo traveler, bring a book, find a bench, and just relax in the quietness of the gardens.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 March 2024

- bjude42 contributionsThe Botanical Garden, City Park and Cafe du Monde - a three-in-one treat! We thoroughly enjoyed wandering through this thoughtfully designed botanical garden! There is even a children's section called Storyland. The Cafe du Monde location across the street in City Park was an added plus! So skip The French Quarter, and enjoy your beignets and coffee in a beautiful green space, and then visit The Botanical Garden!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 June 2024

It was a beautiful place to wander through both in flower and in sculptures. The fact that it's free to wander it is even a better deal yetVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 July 2024

Since I’m now a New York Botanical Garden member, I also get free access to other member botanical gardens. When I first discovered this, I started looking at all the BGs around the US, hoping to make use of my membership. NOBG is a member garden, so we were both able to get in for free. If you’re not a member, the price is $12 per adult
We spent about 1.5 hours at NOBG. At 10 acres, there is a lot to see. Their conservatory is smaller than NYBG, but there are a ton of really nice flowers in there. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, and if the weather is nice, it’s a wonderful place to spend a few hours. There are tons of benches under trees for shade and I can see myself coming here often just to hang out with some friends if I lived in the area.
It’s also conveniently located in City Park, right next to the art museum, which is free to visit.

The is a must do when exploring city park in New Orleans. Not the biggest or most extravagant botanical garden I have ever seen, but easily my favorite. Everything is so well thought out and presented, especially the Japanese Yakumo garden and cactus exhibit. Just a great place to walk around and explore amazing plants. Don't skip it!

I was very disappointed with my visit to the gardens on April 22 Earth Day.
They did not have any special events that day. The gardens had some flowers in bloom and as for the time of year I would have expected much more. The Japanese gardens was a big disappointment and I have never seen one such unkept. The positive was the walkways were very well arranged throughout. Looking at past reviews maybe I have just been spoiled in past botanical garden visits around the country. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder for me this garden and I was not impressed as a gardener myself.

Decided to get away from the hustle and bustle of the French quarter and spend a leisurely day at the New Orleans botanical garden. It’s located in the city park which is 1300 acres large. The botanical garden section is 12 acres with lots of beautiful flowers, Japanese gardens, cactus gardens, lots and lots to see and enjoy.

This was a nice enjoyable walk. It wasn't as extensive as either the aboreteum or conservatory back home. Unfortunately, FREE Wednesdays are only for locals. parking was good. Enjoyed the little Japanese Garden and the Vegetable garden. A few nice sculptures, but this is not the Sculpture Garden that's included with the Art Museum. Butterfly garden wasn't as hoped. Greenhouse had two huge alligator gars in pond.

Incredible display of thousands of plants, from trees to flowers to succulents, and even vegetable gardens. We easily spent most of the afternoon here, and I still don't feel like I saw everything. Would make an amazing venue for a celebration, wedding, or photoshoots! Definitely planning to return soon.

Can you drive in the park? What kind if parking is available for handicap by the Botanical Gardens?
Written 21 April 2019
the person before me said, it is not driveable but there is parking and although I didn't see it (we took a bus) I'm sure there are handicapped spots. It is wheelchair accessible. The sculpture garden is wonderful. enjoy your trip.

Yes! Ralph's on the Park is right there. Also, there is a cantina type restaurant in the park. Finally, the art museum has a cafe that has pretty good food.

This entry states that the gardens are closed on Mondays, but the website for the gardens shows as open daily. Are the gardens open or closed on Monday?

Good question! Think you need to call and ask.

We will be staying at the Prytania Park Hotel on the St. Charles line in April. What is the best way to get to the botanical gardens via streetcar?
Written 8 March 2015
Take the streetcar from St. Charles to Canal and then down Canal to Carrollton. Stay on streetcar onto Carrollton and get off at City Park and then walk into the park to the Botanical Gardens. Very, very easy. Should take around 30 minutes. Canal is the widest boulevard in North America and a nice streetcar ride.
