Neighbourhood: Lakeview
Lakeview extends inland from the shores of Lake Pontchartrain with much of the area reserved for family-friendly City Park. Home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, and the city’s own lush Botanical Gardens, City Park is a New Orleans gem and the perfect spot for outdoor fun with as much of a mix of culture and/or amusement as you would like. Beyond City Park more great excuses to stay outside beckon, whether on land or by boat. Developed a good deal later than most other New Orleans neighborhoods, Lakeview has a distinctively different look and feel compared to other parts of the city. Fans of mid century modern design and contemporary architecture particularly enjoy leisurely drives around the residential streets of Lake Vista, Park Island and along Lakeshore Drive.

We went with a tour guide and had a wonderful experience learning about the history and the various types of resting places. I would not go on my own simply because I did not know who/where well known people were resting. Be mindful to stay hydrated and prepared for the sun. The history of this cemetary and the beauty was incredible.

This is where the very rich are laid to rest and it shows. The grounds are very beautiful, even in November was still able to spot a few squirrels. I went there to pay my respects to Anne Rice, and after a few wrong turns I was able to do so, once I let the cars pass the road in front of me, (cars really do ruin the peace and tranquility, haven't people ever heard of parking their cars and walking?!) The Cemetery is set out beautifully and if you do happen to catch the streetcar from Canal Street, you also pass Greenwood Cemetery getting here, if that is of interest) For fans of Anne Rice, just like seeing her old homes, this is also worth a visit when you come to New Orleans.

Metairie / Lake Lawn cemetery is very big and can get confusing with how sections are labeled. If you are going in to this cemetery on your own to explore, I highly suggest a map. If you are only looking for specific tombs, look up where they are located beforehand!

We like to tour cemeteries when we visit new places & this one is open during Covid times. It’s also the most gorgeous where the wealthy are buried. Go to YouTube ahead of time & do a free virtual tour so it makes more sense. We took an Uber there. It’s next to a highway and very difficult to walk out of!! It was a harrowing experience. Bring a water bottle! We got super thirsty walking in the heat & sun.

I had no intentions of doing a cemetery tour before we arrived. Never say never. Our bus tour driver got our attention with so many cool facts we did not know. I was one of the first off of the bus when we arrived. I took pictures, walked around, and respectfully observed a culture I knew nothing about. They can't bury their deceased loved ones. The beauty of the mausoleums, and the number of those buried in each one was not something I could have expected. I couldn't wait to read up on it when we got back to our room. Needless to say we both learned a lot.

Sooo beautiful, we wandered around a bit but then I downloaded voice map as a hint from another reviewer and got the Metairie walking tour! Was well worth the 5.00 courts start and stop as you like. Great history information, DO NOT miss the Angel of Grief- go in the old main entrance and in the first row of crypts on the right, past the Tomb for Tennessee soldiers. Is breathtaking and moving.

Spent a morning wandering around this serene place. So much history and so much beauty. It's a busy destination, several funeral services were taking place. Also stopped by the tiny, exquisite pet memorial grounds.

You’re able to drive inside and then around this cemetery. We eventually parked and explored on foot. Plenty of impressive mausoleums in various stages of crumble. Be sure to peek inside and find the weeping angel (hint: it’s located in the southeast corner of the cemetery).

A truly awe-inspiring place. Maybe the most beautiful cemetery in the City of the Dead. We drove around in comfort and at our leisure so we could inspect the tombs as we wished. Absolutely breathtaking. Truly a unique spot to visit.

Absolutely loved visiting these beautiful cemetery grounds. The place is huge and magnificent with tons to look at and walk through. We spent a few hours just walking through perusing and paying respects. Very quiet with few other visitors. With all the cemeteries in New Orleans we chose to come to this one as we were traveling with a dog, and it’s dog friendly. We encountered no issues walking around with him but obviously were also respectful when admiring the graves and plots. It was very beautiful and a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Is this "walk through" only? Can one drive through? Thanks!

So you don't need to have an official tour to go to this cemetery?
Written 6 February 2017
Yes no tour required. However the tour guide we used was full of knowledge for this cemetery and we certainly heard many stories, facts and statistics that we would not ordinarily have had access to. For us it was well worth the money for the tour which was not that expensive.

Does the cemetary ever open the doors for the Weeping Angel to be on display? If so, what time and when?
We are here through March and I'd love to get a better view of it, unless you just have to get lucky when there isnt steam on the windows....

I am not sure. May I suggest you do a web search. I am sure your answers will be there.

Are there a lot old oak trees in this cemetery?
Written 26 December 2016
No but about a mile away, in New Orleans City Park, there are hundreds of old, large, moss draped oaks!

We visited this cemetery today but weren't sure where to go to get the maps and CD. We parked next to the main building at the main entrance but saw there was a funeral going on inside. Surely this isn't the same place to get the maps? Is there an office somewhere?
Written 5 August 2016
I didn't have a map or a CD but used my iphone and had a DK Eyewitness guide book, so I sort of knew what I wanted to see. I also did a lot of aimless wandering.
Written 11 August 2016
Is there some kind of guide for the cemetery. We much prefer to wander around on our own but would like some information, too. Thanks...
Written 16 May 2016
I've always just roamed around without any guidance. However, I did a Google search and there's tons of info about the cemeteries of NOLA. Do a Google search for "self-guided tours of Metairie cemeneries."

Hello,
Could you please give me the information of the tour you went on in regards to the Metaririe Cemetery.
Thank you,

If you go to the office of the funeral home on site they will give you a map and a cd to guide you around the cemetery. They take your license as a deposit on the cd and you have to go during normal business hours.

what tour company did you use. I can't locate one that goes to metairie cemeteries? Thanks for your help
Written 22 February 2016
We had a car and drove there. Actually found it accidently on the way to Art Museum and city park .. there were 5 cemeteries on that road. But Metairie was the largest and best of the 5 by far. The weeping lady statue was hard to find .. it was along the edge with lots of Greece looking columns and its with in sight of the huge civil way statue on the horse. It's in the crypt and hard to see .. theres a tiny piece of broken glass on the side and luckily my camera had a tilt screen. some times the statue looks white other times blue depending on the time of day and reflections from the blue stained glass.
hope it helps. We felt safe to walk around here ... the Roche cemeteries .. felt unsafe.

Where do we parking in order to visit this cemetery? What are the hours to visit this cemetery?
Written 28 September 2015
You don't need to park anywhere. You drive around the cemetery and pull over at spots you are interested in getting out and looking at. This is an active, normal cemetery so you behave in the same way you would any cemetery, driving to a spot and pulling off to the side and getting back in once done or walking to other sites. It's not crowded so there is no issue parking by one grave and walking around and leaving your car.
