Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, located in the U.S. Custom House on Canal Street, encourages you to use all five senses as you explore North America’s largest museum devoted to insects and their relatives. You’ll discover why insects are the building blocks of all life on our planet and along the way, you’ll be shrunk to bug size; wander through a mysterious Louisiana swamp; join the active audience of an awards show for bugs, by bugs; and be captivated by thousands of butterflies in an Asian garden. Voted A top museum for you and your kids by CNN, 2009.

This location is across the street from the Aquarium in the City. It is in a government building. The butterfly exhibit was neat, with lots of butterflies of various sizes and colors flying about.

We visited here because we arrived too early to check into our hotel, and it looked interesting. To enter, you have to go through a TSA-type check-in scanning process because it's located in a federal building. No big deal. While there were some insect models...More

Great fun and very interesting for our 9yr old granddaughter. Young interns provided wonderful information. Who would have thought petting a caterpillar could be so cool? Fun short movie, and the butterfly garden was fascinating.

Compared to the more evocative monikers of some other
parts of New Orleans, the downtown’s humdrum title
