A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the
Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

Sorry to say "der ain't nothin' like dat here." Funeral processions or Jazz Funerals are pretty rare, especially like the one featured in Live and Let Die. There are certainly no tours that would have one since real Jazz Funerals are just that, actual funerals. In the rare case where there is a Jazz Funeral, the “Main Line” leads and consists of the group organizing the funeral and the brass band that accompanies them. The main line is followed by a “Second Line.” An example of this occurred when Allan Toussaint passed away in November of 2015. Anyone is welcome to join in and become part of the second line. Sometimes, when someone famous has passed away in another country or city, there will be what is called an organized Second Line Parade that is announced in advance to the public so people can come to join in. I joined in for the one for David Bowie after he passed away in January 2016.
More often, I would say at least once or twice a week in the French Quarter, you can join in a second line that occurs for a wedding or other celebration that has taken place. There is usually no widespread public notice of these second line parades. They start wherever the event was and you are welcome to join in behind the participants and band (again the main line) and become part of the second line. If you are staying in the French Quarter, there is a chance that you will happen upon one of these parades. I run into them all the time. My company, New TourLeans specializes in four-guest motorized historic tours of the French Quarter, and of course, if we come across a second line, we would point it out and encourage you to join in on the fun. I hope you aren't disappointed that it’s not quite like what was depicted in Live and Let Die!
All the best, and enjoy New Orleans,
