The road leading to the temple along the beach is beautiful. In the evenings one can see the fishermen pulling their nets. The temple has beautiful statues leading the way to the pagoda. The archeological site is beautiful with a statue of the Buddha and a few other statues of kings,

A beautiful temple marking the landing site of viharamaha devi. Scattered with stone statues and relics in the white sand dunes makes an impression in your mind. Great view of a clear beach from the dagoba area. Two lonely monks strive to protect this temple from encroachers and litter bugs alike. Help them if you can to protect this piece of history.

According to the records, the original land of this important historical site was more than 200 acres. now the "Poojaa Bhumiya" (Sacred Land) has been reduced to even less than 40 acres! there are only two Buddhist monks live in the monastery with threats to their lives and even the historical monuments in the land are also been illegally demolished. we need more travellers going to this Historical temple so the importance will not go faded and shaded in the memories of the time. it has one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen!

If you are interested in history, or even if you are around Arugam Bay you should make a visit to this temple. It is said to be the landing place of Queen Vihara Maha Devi. The ruins are scattered around not a very large area. There is one single pillar encircled by a few other pillars and you could see hundreds of coins tied around a piece of cloth and hung around these pillars as it is said to grant wishes to the layman.

The next stop should be Magul Maha Viharaya.
