- HandysmithRyde, Australia307 contributionsExcellent Tea Centre in Nuwara EliyaOur private driver suggested we go here rather than our planned stop at Bluefields Tea Centre. It was a public holiday for Diwali so the factory and tea picking was not operating. It is free of charge to be taken on a guided tour of the factory. A very slick operation with well spoken guides and a very smart tea room with lovely atmosphere, great views and comfortable table and chairs. We were able to try Gold Tips and Silver Tips teas which are both very expensive. The hope is you will buy something in their shop and lots of people do including locals. On exiting we were asked if we wanted to buy anything and politely declined and nothing was said. Our driver received a bag of tea for bringing us which I understand happens in all the tea centres. The staff, beautiful view, tea sampling and tour were excellent.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023
- Nishu Mlp26 contributionsHighly recommend their tea plantation tour!!I have visited this place several times with my family, but this time we decided to take a tea plantation tour. This was the day that I learned a lot about tea and tea pickers' lives. That was so interesting and made me to explore more about Sri Lanka tea.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 December 2023
- MeganUnited Kingdom19 contributionsPerfect for tea lovers! We really enjoyed our experience here! The tour guide spoke perfect English and was really informative on the tea making process. The tour was really interesting especially if you love tea like us. The tea and cake at the end was amazing and there is plenty of choice on which tea you can buy.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2023
- seema60Toronto, Canada969 contributionsLovely tea factory tourI was taken to this tea factory as part of a tour. The lady explained about the different types of tea being manufactured and processed in the factory. Historically, Indian labour was brought by the British to work in the tea plantations. Now there are the same families third fourth generation labour still working there. They have been exploited quite badly. The tea processed is auctioned by the government and then bought by big manufacturers who blend the tea to make it cheaper. The factory was empty when I went but they do serve a nice cup of tea and there is a shop on the premises.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 January 2024
- Ivan G6 contributionsBlack & WhiteOk... the factory visit was short as there's not so much to visit, 1 Drying room and 1 tea plant distribution room.... from there to the shop and tea degustation. the tea is ok (variety, smell, flavours) and also the landscape have nice pictures. Have to visit because the location is a must but do not expect to see nothing out of the usualVisited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 January 2024
- Alan GLondon, United Kingdom147 contributionsGreat tea factory visit….Our guide took us to the tea factory & we thoroughly enjoyed the fairly short tour, tea & cake. We had already stopped by the roadside to meet, tip & have photos taken with some friendly tea pickers. The tea selection was very varied & interesting to try. The cake was excellent too. Nice room to sit in & the shop displays are very nice. Some reviews are negative, what do people expect at a tea factory? These people are poor, they work hard for low pay. Go there & support them & their families.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2024

The lovely lady that showed us around had perfect English so was easy to understand It is amazing to learn about the drying process etc kept to very precise timing Also fun to have a go at picking the tea leaves Highly recommend as something a little differentVisited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 31 March 2024
- manucanuckHong Kong, China1,947 contributionsTea factory visitGuide kept on saying this is the best among all other factories, not sure how reliable this is but the girl explaining the process was good, they make black and white tea here. Wanted to do a trekking but it was raining hard and their jeep ride was quite expensive to be honest (20000 LKR for 1 hr). Tea sold here is quite expensive when you compare with the supermarkets i guess it's alright if you wanted the pure organic non-blended ones.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 May 2024

- CAMLondon, United Kingdom670 contributionsInformative tour with around 20 other peopleWe had high hopes for this tour which was organised through Trailfinders/Walkers Tours. However, we were left feeling disappointed: Pros Informative & interesting tour of the factory Free cup of tea after the tour Good view of the tea plantation Cons Our tour had far too many people - around 20 people (other tours only had 2-3 people) Difficult to see and hear what was going on (one elderly woman left the tour within 5 minutes) Very expensive & overpriced tea in the shop No option to see the plantation other than an overpriced jeep safari Room for improvement Charge an entry fee Allow visitors to see the tea plantation by walking and not just paying an extortionate price for a JeepVisited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 August 2024

The place was absolutely crowded so the staff rushed people to try and get through the number of people that were there. They joined two tour groups together and then rushed through the tour. The tour guide had excellent English and she ended it by seating us at a table and asking if we wanted a cup of tea and piece of cake (the cake would cost extra) and pointing out the shop. When we went to the shop and asked to taste the tea, we were pointed to the tea tasting area. Apparently this should all have been explained during the tour. However, she was too busy trying to rush through the tour to bother. With so any tea plantations in the area, choose a smaller one which will give more personalised service.

I visit the factory on factory on 14th January. Fast but nice introduction with a english good speaking woman who showed us the place in 5 minutes.
Is not possible to visit the plantations unless you pay 80$ to visit with a jeep.
The problem was the prices and quality of products. bought this “cotta guard stone” and wait to arrive at home to unwrap it. There’s not a really smart way to open it, there’s a small hole with the tea inside a plastic bag inside. you can’t take it off.
so the black tea is inside this sculpture made of terracotta, when opening it it was already cracked (not my fault, it was packed in 3cm of plastic wrap).
when I opened the package, a piece of the box came out. such a pity, terrible quality.
I would recommend people go somewhere else to buy the products, as it will be way cheaper and probably with a better quality

Our driver chose this particular tea factory to visit, this was the only one we had time to visit so have nothing to compare it with in regards to having a better experience elsewhere. We went on a Sunday which is the only day of the week where the factory is not running so you don’t get to see any of the processes or ladies out in the plantations picking tea. The tour through the factory was very informative but somewhat rushed and difficult to hear as this is a very popular tour spot, so other groups are hot on your heels as you make your way around the factory. The tour is free and you are given a complimentary cup of tea on completion, your guide will also try and upsell you in to purchasing an overpriced piece of cake to go with your cuppa. You are not pressured into purchasing tea however if you wish to buy tea the shop was extremely busy and understaffed so hard to get any info on any tea that you want to purchase as well as pricing. We did find out why our driver took us to visit this particular factory as we noticed as soon as we purchased he disappeared and came back with his free packet of tea. The outlook of all the tea plants for as far as the eye could see was stunning and we did gain useful info regarding the process from the tour, would have preferred to visit when the factory was working.

This is in an area of beautiful tea country and the landscape is stunning, making for some wonderful photographs. The factory itself was interesting but not exactly a hive of activity. I got the distinct impression that no tea processing actually went on there anymore and the equipment and couple of workers were just there for show for the tourists. I may be wrong in that but considering the tonnes that get produced the processing going on didn't seem to equate. Shop was expensive with not that great a range. There were better outlets even just at the airport.
The rating is for the scenery and location rather then the factory tour.

We visited this tea centre as part of a G Adventures tour. The first part of the visit consists of a tour of their factory to show us how the tea is produced. This was very interesting with a lot of the equipment in the factory being last century equipment. Before we went into the center, we saw the older ladies that pick the tea leaves. Apparently, Sri Lanka has lost tea market share in the world as younger people do not wish to pick tea leaves as it doesn't pay well.
After the tour, we had a cup of Orange Pekoe tea which I greatly enjoyed (even more than the tour). I also bought a piece of chocolate cake which I also enjoyed.

I visited the Damro tea centre in Nuwara Eliya. As soon as I entered I wasn't allowed to have a cup of tea as I need some sort of membership that costs Rs 1,500. I was a bit disappointed as I wanted to try and buy some silver tip tea and the only way to do is to pay the fee. It was a bit embarassing as I took a seat and then get up and walk out. They need to put a ticket counter so that people entering the tea room could buy the ticket first. Very disappointed as in the past I never paid any money to have a cup of tea. You probably need to pay for the cup of silver tea on top of this fee. Will never go there. Visited another tea estate named Pedro Estate and they even served a nice cup of black tea for free of charge.

Damro Tea Plantation
BAD Experience! Too touristy and staff are not interested and not personal. Biggest regret as Sri Lanka are filled with many nice places and people. Damro staff are more interested in selling than service. In Dec 2019 before the onset of Covid19, I was personally guided around the tea plantation by a fair local girl that gave me the impression very blankly that she did NOT want to be there at all. I asked for permission to take picture of the tea process and accidentally had a picture of her looking nonchalant and sulky inside my picture! A picture paints a thousand word! have since submitted my feedback to my travel agent who checks in on my mum and I everyday. This same girl’s face only lighted up very slightly when my mum and I started purchasing many teas. Another incident that disappoints me was the complimentary black tea which we declined as it was already mid afternoon and we were afraid that the caffeine will affect our sleep when we arrive at Nuwara Eliya. Thus we requested for chamomile or peppermint tea that they said coat Sri Lankan Rupees 700 (USD3.80) which was not expensive but the tea arrived COLD! This is an abomination to a lovely country that prides itself as a top tea country! It was a rainy day in the hills and that was the last thing my poor old mum needed. Very disappointed with the entire experience! I would avoid all the “touristy” restaurants with big tour buses as we were on a private tour as the guide will have a tendency to bring the tourists there for reasons we all know why... so do your homework and have your travel agent give you a detailed itinery as to where to eat etc..we had a wonderful travel agent and I shall visit Sri Lanka again just NEVER to return to DAMRO!

We had a very informative tour - unfortunately it was on a Monday morning, so there was not much going on in the Factory as the pickers did not work on the Sunday. The guides are all provided by the factory, so are very knowledgable
The tea lounge serves an excellent cup of tea (as you would expect) and the cake is scrummy and very reasonably priced.
Well worth a visit

Tour was not long but very informative. Beautiful views from the car park. Bought a lot of tea but beware the White tea is very expensive. I asked the price of several boxes and they were no more than 790 rupees. When I got to the till I discovered the Gold white tea was 8500 rupees. Bought it anyway but just so people know there is a big difference in the price of some of the tea. Now back home and it all tastes amazing- drinking the ginger tea just now and it is beautiful. Well worth the money.
