President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism...

President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism into the age of international involvement. Despite his power, he never forgot where he came from. Today, visitors can experience the surroundings Truman knew as a young man of modest ambition through his political career and final years as a former president.

The house was wonderful and the guide was extremely knowledgeable. It was a disappointment however that they are not allowing tourists to go upstairs. You only get to view the bottom of the house. But it was still a memorable experience.

We visited the NPS Visitor Center today we found the Truman House was closed there is another visitor Center in town. To purchase timed tickets to the Truman House you have to go to the NPS CTR. We watched a 20 minute video about the personal life of Harry Truman

I went here as a kid, I don't have a lot of recollection about it. I took my 6 year old, and while I don't think she understands the magnitude of being in a home where a President once lived, she really enjoyed it. The park ranger was so knowledgeable and really gave us great insight into what the Truman... More

A park ranger took us into the back porch of the home and out the front door. This was about a 20-30 minute tour. It is just as Bess Truman left it. You may not view the second story. The ranger was very knowledgeable about the Trumans and Bess's relatives. After finishing the tour, go across the street to tour... More

Living in Kansas City we find that the Truman home is always a delight to see and I always learn something new about the First Family from Missouri. This year while visiting family in MO we were in Independence and went by the Truman home. In its day it was quite the home in it's day and now is a... More

I was pleasantly surprised. The tour is excellent and succinct. I did not know that this home is considered a national park. I also did not know that one purchases the ticket at the National Park Visitor Center located on Main Street by the town square, so be sure to obtain your ticket before you go to the house! There... The house has been preserved just as it was on Bess Truman's death. This means the house looks like it did in the 70's. Like many older people at a certain point they stopped spending money on the house as they didn't figure it mattered much. The park guide and I were the only ones in the house for the... More

Truman's home is gorgeous! You have to pay for a tour at the national park visitor center located 5 blocks from the house in Downtown Independence. Watch a short film about the house then tour the house. His hat, cane, and coat are still hanging where he left them.

Definitely a 'go to' Presidential Library and Home. Both are learning experiences for all things Harry Truman. The Library does have handicapped parking and an easy wheelchair accessible entrance. The Museum could use a small coffee shop to stop a moment, reflect, and continue. President Truman and his beloved Bess are buried in the Museum courtyard. Do stop a moment... More

We were fortunate to have a private tour of the home with a very knowledgeable NPS docent. The tour lasted about 45 minutes (although advertised as 30 minutes) because the docent took the time to answer so many of our questions. Really enjoyed this little tour. Harry and Bess appeared to have lived a very "average" life outside of the... More
