About
The former royal palace of Tirtagangga (which means water of the Ganges, Hinduism's holy river) features tiered fountains, gardens, and stone sculptures of mythical creatures spouting water into bathing pools. Just outside the palace grounds, the views of the lush rice paddies of northeastern Bali are stunning.

- RSLondon, United Kingdom75 contributionsGreat fun feeding the many fishAs with all (at least it seems all) Bali temples, you cannot go inside/see statues etc. but the beauty with Tirta Gangga is the sheer amount of fish and outdoor features that they have. Buy some fish food from the stalls outside of the temple and enjoy feeding the thousands of fish in the various ponds/pools. Great spot for some photos as well, definitely worth getting there early to avoid the crowds.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 October 2023
- Miss_Teach1Staffordshire, United Kingdom328 contributionsLovely oriental gardensWe visited here and were very impressed. The grounds are large and there’s a view of rice fields which can be seen from certain parts. The fish are stunning- it’s fun to feed them. You can buy bread or food outside and take this in. There are many flowers and plants to see. Whilst it gets busy, it’s not too busy and it has a calm feel to it. It was a lovely experience and would recommend a visit.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 November 2023
- ZimminaroundtheworldOkinawa Prefecture, Japan1,970 contributionsTouristy but Beautiful and FunTirta Gangga was part of my East Bali tour. I really enjoyed parts of this attraction. I was not a fan of the animals near the entrance used for photos. I am sure the bats would prefer to be left alone and not used as a photo op during the middle of the day. Back to Tirta Gangga. The palace was beautiful, the gardens and ponds were fun to walk around in and take photos. The ponds had stepping stones which got crowded at times. There are some huge koi fish in the ponds. I'd say 30 min to an hour is good enough to visit the palace.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 January 2024
- QueenLanAdelaide, Australia55 contributionsBeautifulBest time to visit as not peak season. Few tourists so lovely and relaxing able to see gardens and take photos without stress. Very beautiful gardens and water palace with so many fish. Nice little cafe with good iced lattes on warm day! Worth the visit. So good to have our driver with us, thanks Gedeh for getting us there safe and sound. 🥰Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 February 2024
- GlobeTrotters4001Brisbane, Australia813 contributionsTouristy but worth a look after our curtailed visit of "The Heavenly Gate" Kempuyang TempleHaving already been assailed with "The Heavenly Gate" Lempuyang Temple, this was a breath of fresh air to walk through this once Royal Palace with its water gardens. Yes we still have the self-absorbed instagrammers not remotely interested in Balinese culture or history, but perhaps it was because we chose not to stay and wait the estimated 3 hours for our contrived "Heavenly Gate" photo, the crowds at our next stop was quite acceptable. A leisurely walk through the water features, taking beautiful photos of the water features, carvings and gardens was most calming and cooling.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 February 2024
- RamboNWAlbertaSpruce Grove, Canada651 contributionsFantastic temple, no crowdsWe stopped here enroute to Tulamben Resort hotel. Our driver knew area well. Right off main highway.. This was an amazing place, 70000 entry fee, beautiful setting! We bought some fish food and strolled the temple grounds. Lots of fish to feed and gorgeous pools, fountains, structures.. We spent about 45 minutes here, really enjoyed the stop. Well worth the time and cheap entry for what’s available here. Our five year old grand daughter loved the place and seeing such beautiful sites!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 March 2024
- Naomi BPerth, Australia161 contributionsTranquil water gardensRp 70000 entry fee when we went. Once inside people will approach offering to be your guide for a fee. We declined and were happy enough without the guide. You weren’t harassed if you declined. Lovely water gardens, statues, peaceful setting. Plenty of tourists there, mostly congregated in a couple of areas. One side seemed a little underused & they could potentially move either fish or pathways into the other large pond to disperse the crowd a bit. We didn’t feel the areas you could swim in looked clean enough but other people were happily swimming You can pay extra for fish food but honestly we didn’t and wouldn’t as the fish appeared really overweight and that’s probably not healthy.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 August 2024
- wokmail2007Raglan, New Zealand23 contributionsUnforgettable swimmingOne of our favourite experiences. Arriving early, it wasn't crowded. We enjoyed the beautiful statues and stepping stones through the large fish ponds. Luminous butterflies flitted between luxuriant vegetation. The place was clean and immaculately maintained. Swimming in the designated pools was simply stunning. Many varieties of dragonfly are common in this area and even landed on me. Unforgettable. Ice cream not bad eitherVisited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 August 2024
- adventuremedWashington DC, District of Columbia177 contributionsNot as tranquil as the water palace but very nicely done. This place is hopping usually with lots of tourists posing everywhere for the perfect IG photo. This makes walking difficult sometimes 😂 as you have to wait. Nonetheless, peaceful places can be found. The architectural details and conception of this garden is very interesting and beautiful. Highly recommended.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 September 2024

40,000 Rupiah entrance fee, and since it's a garden and not a temple, no sarongs required. People wait in line to take pictures of themselves feeding the fish. And these fish are big and fat, well-fed, with no predators to eat them. Really nice garden. Construction is going on to improve the area surrounding the tiered fountain. A few places to sit, eat and people-watch. That's it. Tirta Gangga became popular when tourists started going to Lempuyang Temple. Not a must visit, but still pleasant.

One of those places that could be amazing if not for all the tourists!
Parked across the road (at cost) and heaps of stalls selling fish food etc (dont buy it there, its cheaper closer to the gate).
Lots of little stalls approaching the gate. I dont remember the price but the ticket seller didnt charge me for my daughter so I just paid for myself.
The place itself is quite breathtaking and would be so beautiful and peaceful...... except there are HUNDREDS of people. There is plenty of space for everyone but so many trying to get their instagram shots they can get quite pushy and then take a hundred photos to get their shot, meanwhile holding up everyone else. It would be so lovely if you could find a time to visit when there werent so many tourists. I mentioned that to our driver and he said "it's always like this, there is no quiet time". Quite a unique experience walking across the tiles across the pond feeding the fish but the previously mentioned Instagrammers (literally fully made up in flowing dresses like a professional shoot... except using their phones) stop half way along and back up all the other visitors behind then. Great for kids if they can be patient trying to get past those holding up the line.
There is a cafe too and public toilets although take your own paper and hand sanitiser because with that many people using them they're a little bit grubby.

We reached the place around 3 in the afternoon. It is very close to Pura Lempuyang, on the foothills of Mount Lempuyang. Therefore, the trip to both these places can be done together. There are many restaurants outside Tirta Gangga for taking a lunch break.
It was teeming with people enjoying themselves in the garden when we reached the place. There are loads and loads of fishes in the ponds in this garden palace and fish feeding is really fun. You can buy some ready-to-eat cheap fish food outside the entry gates and feed the fishes.
The main pond also has cement stumps kind of a thing arranged like a path amid the pond. For fun, you can jump from one stump to the other and get to the other corner of the pond. You can also take some good clicks in this area.

Here's the place where you can enjoy the beautiful nature from the garden and the uniqueness of the statue from tample. You can easily feed the fish in the pond around the garden. You only need to buy fish food from the vendor in front of the garden, and cute fish are waiting for you there. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions and is visited by many foreign and local tourists. so don't forget to stop at Tirta Gangga when you visit Bali.

While on a car tour of the local area our guide took us here. We all loved it. The pools were just beautiful, we bought fish food and fed the fish and jumped across the pools. Such a memorable place to visit.

This was garden was constructed in 1946 and was the water garden for the royal palace. it is a lovely little park to walk around, for probably an hour max. we joined the line to walk the line of steppings stones through the water, which took forever because of all the instagrammers stopping to take their photos - taking 10 minutes each! sitting down, standing up, mid-leap between the steping stones, facing away, looking down at the fish, feeding the fish. luckily we just found it funny, but the group behind us in the queue started to get annoyed and shouting at the people to keep moving.

I visited in Dec 2019 for the first time on the way back to Kuta from Tulamben. Entrance fee of 40k per person, but clothing restrictions weren't as strict as for a temple. Quite busy when we were there but still possible to get some decent photographs.

Stopped here while touring island. Paid £2.50 for entrance fee and brought some fish food at a stall to feed the koi carp. It was reasonably busy but not overcrowded and scenery is lovely for some photos. You can pay extra and swim in a large pool there which also has paddling pool for young children. Its fun feeding fish from the stepping stones. There is no temple to go inside so you dont need to cover your arms and legs. There are restaurants and toilets as well as a few shops at entrance and a cafe inside

40k/pax entrance fee. It's not a temple so no need to dress decent but don't come half naked ;)
It was drizzling slightly when we arrived, so we had some food first at Warung Rika. Before that, it was raining heavily. I read that people wait in line for a long time just to take pictures. I was lucky when I got there, I waited less than 5 mins and I could take pictures already, there weren't many people around.
I think it's because of the rain and co-vid scare that there are not many people. When the rain stops I can see more people coming.
The pictures on Instagram were fantastic, makes you want to immediately fly there but when I was actually there it wasn't that pretty. Darn instagram! always make everything looks so good.
It's not that bad but you would probably be slightly disappointed if you hope to see the same dreamy pictures as you did online. I didn't feed the fishes, I think they are fat enough from all the tourist that feeds them to get nice pictures. Probably the reason why my pics look sad, cause no fishy wants to come to me :(
My hair is a mess from the rain, sweat and sunblock spray. There's also an area for swimming/soaking, but only passed by. Either than that it feels like a very big garden.

This was our fourth visit to Tirta Gangga, always a lovely place to visit and largely restored after being destroyed by volcanic eruption in 1963. We first visited in 1989, few tourists, largely uncommercialised and work still underway rebuilding the ponds and terraces. What a difference today, a place of true beauty with amazing tropical flora, fountains, water features, walkways, bridges and the fat koi that inhabit the pools. We arrived late morning after visiting Ujung Water Palace and the hordes of tourists and locals were already present. We joined the throng in seeking vantage points to view the facility and take photos. The old legs prevented us from climbing to the upper terraced levels but still plenty to enjoy. Tip: be there at opening time, probably the best time to evade the crowds. The surrounds are now highly commercialised with paid parking, restaurants, cafes, stalls with the usual merchandise. You can purchase food to feed the already fat koi or have a python draped around your shoulders for a photographic memento.

I say yes, it was one of my favourite stops - very peaceful and cooler up there. Combine it with one or two other stops out that way to make it worthwhile.

Thanks in advance

Is there any dress code? I also usually wear my flip flops as well, is this ok?
Thanks for your advice in advance

Hi. There is no dress code required for the water palace and you do not have to wear a sarong.

They do have a few ramps here and there but stones pretty rough. Just ask a few friendly Indonesians or other tourists to help you over the difficult bits. You'll be fine.

I think it was like $1 or $2
And then you had to pay to swim in the pool that was like a donation so we paid .50cents
