We visited the Thanumalayan temple which is also popularly known as the Suchindram temple. The temple opens at 5pm but we arrived at 4. The friendly temple volunteer, aka a tour guide, approach us and started the tour. He walked us though approximately 30 shrines and pointed to the captivating architecture of the music pillars, and even brought to the secret corner where no visitor allowed to come. Priceles experience! (of course, we tipped him and gave a small donations at every shrine we stopped)
Highly recommend!

This temple is huge and awe-inspiring. The temple itself is very old and you can see it in the pillars and the height of the ceiling in the walkways. The doors leading upto each garbagruha are not very tall though. You will see Shiva, Venkateshwara and Brahma and the very beautiful Hanuman.
The Gopuram is beautiful and so is the Tank. I went there in the night. I would strongly advise people to visit in daytime too. You should enjoy the gopuram architecture. I had no time and missed it.
The name Stanu is Siva, Mal is Vishnu and Ayan is Brahma. That is what i am told. There are book shops nearby and you should buy Sthala Purana. I could not. Had to rush out. Do not miss it if you are in the region.

A friend reffered this place and glad we visited. Temple is different from what we usually see. I.e 1) Bhrahma,Vishnu and Shiva in same linga. 2) Navagrahas are carved on the roof 3) Anyaneya statue is of 18 feet with his tail is above his head. Temple is 1000+years old and has good vibe.
Only thing to Avoid is people trying to sell you stuff inside the temple ( Garlands and ghee).

known more as the Suchindram Temple this is a must visit place. There is also a big Hanuman statue of 22 feet inside the temple complex which is made with one solid granite stone. There are 4 musical pillars which emit a different musical note if you tap it. The temple closed by 11 am in morning and ensure you get to see the abhishekham done before that

Very big temple of God with separate sanctum sanctorum for Shiva, vishnu and Brahma. The temple is also famous for huge Anjaneya. The temple is very fast and very well maintained. Thoroughly enjoyable visit. We will get karuppatti nearby , which are very tasty.

Suchindrum temple is 11 km from Kanyakumari city and 7 km from Nagarcoil town. This Suchindram town situated in the Southern most district of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu State, India. It is approximately 85 kms from Trivandrum city, the Capital of Kerala.
. Busses ply from Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Trivandram. The nearest railway station is Nagarkoil on the Trivandrum - Kanyakumari section of the Southern Railway.
The entrance tower to this temple is visible from a distance as it rises majestically for 134 feet. The face of the tower is covered with sculptures and statues from Hindu mythology. There is a covered area in front of the main entrance and the entrance itself is about 24 feet high with a beautifully carved door. There is only one corridor running along the outer wall of the temple with many shrines and mandapams scattered in the inner area. This temple attracts both Vaishnavites and Saivites in large numbers. About 30 shrines to various deities within the temple complex, the large Lingam in the sanctum, the idol of Vishnu in the adjacent shrine. The large idol of Hanuman ( depicting 'VISUWAROOPAM) at a height of about 18' at the Eastern end of the Northern corridor is the main attraction.
This temple represents almost all the deities of the Hindu pantheon. Visitors who.come to visit Rock Memorial at Kanyakumari, make a point to visit this temple also because of its proximity.

Suchindram is a small temple town between Kanyakumari and Nagercoil, around 10Kms from KKumari. One will be impressed by the sheer architectural marvel of the temple. The main idol depicts the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara and is is situated beneath a tree. You have the idol of Nandi made of shells, around 18 ft tall idol of Hanuman (which in fact is the most famous and worshipped God in this temple), Lord Vishnu idol as well. We were fortunate enough to witness the decoration of Hanuman idol using butter. We got the help of a guide (in fact right at the entrance itself this person joined us and started explaining the history of the temple, he easily understood we are tourists) and got insights into each idol and the history & mythological story behind them. It was interesting and I would suggest any first timer to avail this service. Temple interiors itself will evoke a sense of spirituality in one. The spoilsport here are the priests themselves who will force you to buy garlands, ghee lamps, scented water at exorbitant rates. They literally try to influence your religious beliefs in making to buy these stuff by giving big sermons. They wont allow you to concentrate & even go to the extent of blocking your way until you buy some pooja stuff. This is very irritating and frustrating and in one instance I had to shout at one of them wherein he was trying to thrust a pot of scented water as an offering to the Hanuman idol. He was quoting a price of 1000/- and his behavior was nowhere close to what you would expect in a priest, but a beggar or street smart guy!! Well you need to literally ignore these guys vehemently not only in this temple but in almost all famous temples in Tamilnadu. But to summarize nothing can dampen the architectural marvel of this temple that includes a small section with pillars which actually produce all the 7 sounds of carnatic music and an other section with produces sounds of various musical instruments, simply outstanding.. Definitely worth the visit.

This is a very interesting temple about 12 km from Kaniyakumari, dedicated to the three main deities of Hinduism; Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The three deities are in a single form called Sthanumalayam.
All men have to enter only after removing their shirts and vests, and the women have to be either in a sari or salwar kameez. You have to buy at least two flower garlands as offerings to the deities. We had to keep all our stuff in the lockers near the entrance, including cameras and cellphones, and pay a token amount for the locker hire.
A guide, who could speak to us in Hindi, offered his services as we entered (pay as you wish). He told us quite a few interesting facts about the temple and its rituals, which we would not have learned about otherwise. The musical pillars were particularly fascinating. Each pillar emitted a different musical note when we thumped it with our hands. There was an 18 feet tall Hanuman idol, and a huge hall with more than 1000 carved stone pillars.
Photography is prohibited inside the temple.
There is a pretty pond just outside the temple. We were quite impressed by the temple architecture, and its surroundings.

Is there an option of special darshanam
Written 27 April 2017
There is no special darshanam facility in Thanumalayan Temple. However while taking archana tickets , if you request for guidance, you can get a brahman pandit to escort you and show you all the nook and corners of the Temple including access to quick darshan. He accepted a tip of Rs.200 for guiding our family. Abhishekams are also performed on daily basis for which you have to be present in the Temple at 10 AM. When i went in Feb 2017 , charge for this Abhishekam was Rs.500.

Very ancient temple and currently maintained by kerala people in their style. Gents should remove shirts before entering temple by wearing pants/dhoti and Womens with chudidar/Sarees.
Written 28 September 2017
Yes, men are required to take off their shirts and have to proceed bare chested. Male Children are permitted to keep on their baniyans/vests. Suggest you carry a towel that you can drape over your shoulder.
Try find a good temple guide priest to show you around. The place is vast, and has some very intricate and fascinating carvings & a lot of history / mythology.
