- Alles Clairechen8 contributionsAmazing experience (incl. bird watching)Bineesh went above and beyond to give us the best experience we could have here. We explored the backwaters on two different boats (Shikara and small boat), amazing veggie Lunch was included and whenever we said something about drinking, tea, toilet he made stops here and there to provide us with everything we needed. We saw eagles, ice birds, kingfishers, … and enjoyed an amazing afternoon (around 5 hrs !). The prices are very affordable for that (5000 rps) and it’s totally worth it. Bineesh lives in a village in the backwaters and knows everything about the place, if you are interested in learning. Also, he will take amazing pictures of you to keep memories of this amazing experience! His instagram is: @allus_back_water_cruiseVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 November 2023
- love_travelingBengaluru, India163 contributionsAlleppeyAlleppey means the 1st thing comes to our mind is backwaters. Well, this place will offer more than this. Clean beaches, temple, church, harbour etc. But, make sure you plan your stay little outside of Alleppey. I was at Mararikulam. The beach was calm, clean and scenic. The fishermen started their homestay that will offer you home made authentic kerala foods. Then you can always hire auto 🛺 and look around the city Alleppey and sightseeing.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 December 2023
- Aheli1 contributionLovely backwaters tour with Bineesh :)Allus Boat Cruise was recommended to us by our homestay. The owner/boat driver/tour guide, Bineesh, made it a great experience for us. For almost 3-4 hours, he took us through the main and smaller parts of the backwaters. The boat had good shade from the sun, comfortable seats and even a bed. He also took us for an authentic Alleppey lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the waters - the food was delicious! It was our first time experiencing the backwaters and we found it absolutely beautiful. We couldn't have asked for a better person than Bineesh to take us around. He made nice conversation, explained everything we saw and even took family pictures of us. Highly recommend this boat tour! Perfect way to soak in the beauty of Alleppey. :) Boat Tour Instagram: @allus_back_water_cruiseVisited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 December 2023
- hsbhatt25 contributionsValue for Money and more...Had been wanting to do the backwaters cruise a lot but the prohibitive houseboat packages sank my heart. Then I saw there was an option of a Shikhara boat ride for a fraction of the cost and I was so happy. Went with Shikhara Tours and was guided by Dhiya to a nice 3 hour ride from Punnamada lake, through some enchanting canals to the surprisingly vast Vembanad lake all for a surprising low Rs.3000. The five of us in our entourage had the entire boat to ourselves The stops on the way at quirky restaurants was interesting and also broke the monotony for the children. In Dal Lake there are floating vendors who will charm you with their sales pitches and I hope here too we see it some day! The boat was made very inviting as it is quite spacious and with comfortable seating and a huge bed right in the middle. The bow is also padded and generously provided with cushions.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 February 2024

Started on a bigger boat and then switched to a smaller one which was able to navigate the smaller canals. Breakfast was included. Aneesh even got us to pose for some photos - was a highlight! We booked the entire houseboat for ourselves and it was worth it. We stayed in it overnight and were well taken care of by the staff. We were provided all 3 meals which were sumptuous and were given an amazing candle-light dinner to celebrate my wife's 67th Birthday with a very tasty cake for dessert. Thoroughly enjoyed this experience.Dear Friend, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us on Tripadvisor. I did 6hour day cruise. It was wonderful. The lunch served was very good. The tea was also very good. It rained also for one hour which added to the adventures. We had booked a heritage deluxe houseboat for an entire day and night. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience for us,
Cons
Our houseboat got delayed by half an hour which should not be the case. As checkout is at 9 and they get good 3 hours for everything.
It was little dirty. Considering what I am paying I expect much more cleanness. I could see some spider webs etc, lizards, and we had booked a double decker one, so top portion was not at all cleaned.
AC service was provided only in night (though it was told before) but there was no fan in houseboat and it was hell hell hell hot. For us as it was double decker so it was little better. Please confirm on this if the houseboat has a fan or not. For us when we complained they gave a small cooler but it was pretty useless. So don’t rely on these.
There were no soaps tissues provided. No dustbins in bathrooms. All these minute details were missings.
Pros:
Amazing amazing amazing experience.
There were in total 3 members in houseboat. One cook, one captain and one for other works. They were nice people. When we entered they served us with welcome drink . It was pretty tasty.
All the meals were very tasty and they paid heed to any suggestion we gave
They were very punctual with time, There usual time to give breakfast is 8 but we requested for 7 and our breakfast was ready by 7.
We needed a cake on the boat for some celebration and they provided us with one. It was very tasty.

Did 2 trips in a Shakira boat - there are loads available and the rate was 500 IR per hour.
We did a 3 hour and a 5 hour tour, both good - but the 3 hour tour was probably best, going down the narrow channels.
The large houseboat are a bit of an expensive scam, as they don't go anywhere interesting because of their size.

The best way, inexpensively to see the ever-changing life along waterways. The ferry ride is relaxing and allowed us to see and experience Alappuzha’s beautiful backwaters. It offered a brief glimpse into the local way of life on the river. The ferry winds through both narrow and wide bodies of water. You will see angler laying out nets from their tiny boats, stunning birds of prey and smaller river dwelling birds darting around. We also used the ferry every day to travel into the city centre from where we stayed (7 minutes ride) as well as some carefully planned day trips, to neighbouring townships all for very few Indian Rupee. Travel like & with the local community, get off the ferry and go exploring. Latest ferry schedules are available from the Government of Kerala State Water Transport Department.

We were served coconut drinks when we checked in at 12.00nn onto the Gayathri II houseboat on the Alleppey. There was also a fruit platter filled with oranges, apples and a pineapple. Lunch followed soon after with the main dish being fried fish (meen varuthathu).
We then sailed along the picturesque canals, stopping at a seafood market to buy half kg of tiger prawns (not cheap, 10 pieces for INR800), before returning to the houseboat for some awesome banana fritters.
When we berthed for the night at 5.00pm, the captain and cook suggested that we take a INR600 tuk tuk ride to the beach 7km away for the sunset. We declined, and instead walked along the canal and managed to take beautiful photographs of the sunset across the lush paddy fields.
During dinner, we were served very good masala chicken and the prawns we bought.
Very clean boat equipped with mosquito netting. Our rooms were clean and air-conditioned, with bathroom attached. Very nice boat crew too. All in all, an excellent and memorable experience sailing on the backwaters because the scenery was beautiful and the waters surprisingly clean!

We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight cruise, reading other reviews I would say choose your provider carefully. We were with My Trip houseboats, 5 of us in a 3 bedroom with ensuites houseboat. We had 3 staff on board. We had our cameras, books and the desire for some quiet downtime and it was wonderful. Scenery is lovely, plus seeing people living waterside.
Yes, there are a lot of these boats but we all contribute to that by wanting to visit.
We had wonderful food - lunch, dinner and breakfast the next morning with attentive staff. We were offered massages at a local Ayurvedic centre (additional cost) and these were a great addition.
We had fans in the main area all afternoon with AC was on from 6pm till bedtime, then on in our rooms overnight so we were very comfortable.

The general idea is nice. You rent a houseboat for the night. You board at 12:00pm abd start cruising from the river to one of the canals, back to the river, then to the lake. You stop for lunch and continue cruising till 5:00pm. You have dinner, stay to sleep on the boat. Get up in the morning, have breakfast and cruise back to the starting point.
We had the whole boat to ourselves with a cook. The food was great. The room was nice. The route was not interesting enough. All the boats sailed on the same route. The only difference is probably the price

The experience on the boathouse is really nice. We booked through JCT make my trip. The food and the staff are really helpful and attentive. There is like a butler on the boat. They provided hot water on request for my 2 year old as and when required for all her meals.
In a few hours our journey started and they provided us with welcome drink a refreshing lemonade. Later we stoped for lunch and if you choose your menu as Non veg they provide you nice fish fry. Alleppey is known for fresh fish. We stoped at a village to purchase some fresh prawns and the butler cooked it for us. They organise a candle light dinner with the cooked prawns. Nice initiative and something unique, they try to make with the limited resources they have on the boat. They provided even evening tea and pakoda. And morning breakfast. We ate authentic Kerela food only on the boat. We were in Munnar 2 days before this but we dint get to taste some authentic food at the resort. Our Resort had just limited menu for dinner and breakfast so I can say the boat house was way better than the 4 star hotel we booked and stayed in Munnar.
Our cab driver Mr. Sudhan CR was really supportive and recommended us many places and provided right suggestions on sight seeing. He even gave us his membership card to use at the Kanan Devan Tea Museum and we got some discount. He is the best polite and friendly driver.

I went to visit the Allepey Backwaters just before Easter weekend. Luckily my boat ride was arranged by my hotel staff and I ended up meeting Bineesh. He’s the best tour guide who gave us a complete ride around the backwaters, communicated in multiple languages, helped us meet the locals, took us through magnificent small canals and routes at the best price. Must use his boat and services for a good experience
His number is 9446776106
Good time to visit is August - May

This place is located in Alleppey away from the town.
When we arrived on the houseboat for our 4 hour tour they greeted us and served us fresh lemon juice.
The crew who ran the houseboat that we went on for our tour looked after us very well.
We had an excellent time on the houseboat where the chef cooked a brilliant lunch for us all which was delicious.
This was a once in a life time opportunity to go and see the backwaters in Alleppey.
The service was excellent and we were looked after very well.
We did a 4 hour tour in a houseboat and the views were breathtaking and beautiful!
The staff who organised this trip for us did an excellent job.
I would throughly recommend this trip to all my family and friends who want to experience an adventure on a houseboat in the backwaters of Kerala.

The journey through the backwaters of Alleppy was great and interesting. We had a coconut stop on the way.
The initial part of the journey was through dirty patches of water, but soon the water-body became clear, vast, scenic and everyone on our boat enjoyed the journey,
We also enjoyed on-board lunch before we de-boarded for the Suvasam Lake Resort at Kumarakom.

I took an overnight cruise in the backwaters with my wife a dozen years ago. We are returning to Alleppey in a couple of weeks. Has anyone run into a British captain, name of Jessup? He took us on his eco boat. Fantastic crew. I’d like to see him again, if I can find him.

Many shikara rides operators are offering packages...can't we book shikara according to our own suitable timings?
Written 10 September 2019
Yes you can. You can book the entire boat for your own family like we did. It depends on whats available when you get there.
Written 12 September 2019
Do I need to book tickets for shikara rides before visiting alleppy? Can't I book tickets on spot?
Written 10 September 2019
You can book on the spot also which is better, if it's not a high season then better you see the boat and book.

Houseboat or day cruise? Which is the better option.?
Also if opting day cruise what are the places to visit in Alleppey?

The houseboat trip was really good
Written 10 September 2019
You have to take a bus. There is no direct ferry or boat to Cochin from Allepy.

What is more beneficial: booking a houseboat well in advance or on arrival ?
What points should be taken care off for a memorable and enjoyable houseboat stay ?
I am planning to visit alleppey in the month of June this year with my family.
Also would like to know the names of some reasonable and trustworthy houseboat operators.
Written 29 March 2018
I would suggest doing a boat trip for the day rather than overnight. They dock about 6 and there’s not much to do after that. Alternatively stay at the Citrus retreat. Lovely hotel right on the backwaters who offer a boat cruise too and other services. Great massages, facials etc.
