Our guide had booked us front row seats. Watches as the 2 principal characters applied their make-up. It took them an hour! Story narrated as to how the dancers are trained, with examples given by one of the characters. Then a short version of the tale between good & evil. Very interesting a s this was performed with not a... More

This was very interesting. Very nice small stage and with approx 100 seats. We were front line. It was nice to see how makeup was done before show starts. Explanations of characters and eye movement was so good. The show was approx 2hrs and after that you can have pictures take with actors. 2nd show was for local fighting me... More

Having been advised to arrive 1 hr before the dance started, we had seats at the front. This allowed us to watch the two characters applying their make-up. We were also given a good demonstration of a number of key facial expressions that are used in the performance. There was a printed sheet that explained what we were going to... More

We visited the Kathakali centre in Fort Kochi. Definitely an interesting experience. What I missed was the user friendliness of the performance. The evening performance consists of 4 parts: 1. watching actors putting on their make-up (1-1.5 hrs) 2. Explanation of the characters, hand and eye movements, etc. (30 min) 3. "Drum concert" (15min) 4. The actual play Don't get... More

A fascinating chance to see the local drama dance with 3 different characters, close up. At the same time it is worth booking to see the local fighting men who are just nearby.... this was also amazing to watch and unlike anything we had seen before.

This is the most unusual traditional dance form I have ever seen. I guess the fascination is partly in watching the preparation which takes about an hour to do the make up and have the costume fitted. Usually you'd just see the dance but 'they' were keen to show us and explain what it was all about, so we could... More

It's certainly not expensive and it's always nice to see some local culture. The actors are great to watch, but the music is really really loud and jarring. The show is an hour-we came 30 minutes late and I suggest that's plent of time to get the gist of it...
