Pace of business (except the jewellery markets) definitely suffered with the global economic crisis.

So much so that escalators and air conditioning were switched off! Needless to say, I didn't have much fun sourcing at over 37 degs Celsius, whilst climbing up and down the dead escalators!

Quality of products are Moderate to Low, and the standard answer to a picture/ sample is "we can customise it". MOQ ranges from 1000 to 10000 pcs (depending on product), with a refundable RMB 500 sample cost if you commit your bulk orders. However, as the showcased products were rather unappetizing, one would really question the quality of "customisation".

Some standard answers are "we will improve on the sample until you are happy". So this place is really for simple products & plenty of time for tweaking.

If you are looking for ready-to-sell items of higher quality, my guess would be Shenzhen/ Guangzhou. (Yet to discover). There are a handful of "nicer" looking shops, but of course it comes with a much higher price - this is where "cheap sourcing" comes to an end!

On MOQ: If you are able to distribute 500-600 pcs (mixed color/ per size) - i.e. you already work with hypermarkets/ chain stores, you could probably find some gems after searching really hard. Give yourself at least 2 days.

However, if you need anything less than 200 pcs per size, please DO NOT bother with Yiwu. You'll be better off with taobao.com and getting a bulk discount from the online sellers.

Cabs, hotels, food are affordable. Overall, the key disappointment is on the maintenance of the place, how "huge" but "empty" the plazas are, and the lack of innovative products!

Signages are no longer relevant especially since many shops have moved or closed down, and there's no initiative to bring the relevant tenants closer to create better sourcing efficiencies.

All in all - a HUGE disappointment!

Yiwu International Trade City is like a big wholesale mall where you can find almost all items from a pin to aeroplane. The market is huge spread around in 6 buildings. Each building has around 5 floors.

Each floor specializes in a particular commodity.
Like ground floor will specialize in a particular category like toys - so you will find all toys related items in this floor.

The market is big, and you need to do your homework before coming as each building has its own speciality and its very huge and vast. Depending on the type of product you are looking for you need at least two days to search the market and analyze products and then place the order on third or fourth day.

Market is big with lots of variety and combination of the same product.
Most shop owners do not know english, so better take a translator or even better if you install translation app on your spart phone.

Most Google services are banned in china, so it is better if you install the language package before hand which becomes very handy.

Its better if you do your search and work before hand. Yiwu market has an official site which list all the shops and their products, so you will be in a better position to visit those shops directly for your order. The site is : http://en.yiwugou.com/

Over all the market is huge and you are surely to find the product you are looking for.

If deciding to go to Yiwu for business please make sure that you have a local with you to translate. Possibly only about 5 out of 100 traders speak English. Also be aware of the quality as they tend to hide odd items inside the pre packaged goods.
Don't go there during the very Hot Months as it is unbearable.
The only food available is local style, however it is the first time in possibly 15 trips to China that I have ever been ill.
The only option for me was to either go hungry and thirsty or make the long treck across the road to a KFC which is not something I would usually do in China. Also as expected the toilets are disgusting. As you would always be aware buy, or order with caution, if the supplier ships to you, you will not always get what you order and pay for,
it is also important to have a driver collect you at the end of the day, because to get a Taxi is Like Gold, then it is a Share situation there and you could be squashed in the back seat with four to five people. A real China Experience!!!!

I was on a business trip to Hangzhou and decided to drop by the Yiwu International Trade City during the weekend due to some good comment about this place as I'm planning to explore my own business.

The place is huge and a few buildings to explore, however if you do not have an intention to purchase in bulk or wholesale, this place can be skipped. This place is only dedicated for wholesale and they do not entertain customers buying in small quantity.

If you are planning to purchase wholesale, this is the place. However, I would recommend you to decide what you want to get from there so that you don't have to waste time wandering around the the huge buildings.

The place is not so crowded, not as I expected but they do offer cheap price in terms of wholesale. Another advice is, this place is not so clean and the food is so-so only. Make sure you bring your own food or eat full before you go.

I guess this is not the place to be for tourist but more for business purpose.

Day time its all business business business. Futian market is amazing having 6 block and each block has 5 floors. More than 83000 shops. There is no Wi-Fi in Futian market which is a big No No as all business people are visiting from all over the world and need Wi-Fi many times one has to call back using Whatsapp or Skype etc.
If you are there then don't forget to visit Binwang night market. It's start around 7pm and goes till 12pm. 100's of stalls including foods and clothes and shoes.
Be careful of women standing just outside and arpund night market. They will ask you 'massage' and then ask ypu to follow them into quite and dark streets. Its not massage its adult servicas but very risky. Just stay away.never ever trust anyone of follow anyone to their room. There has been cases of looting and fights. But otherwise it's very safe city.
Overall cool place to visit. Metro bus is very convenient and cheap. Lots of indian, Arabic and halal food restaurant close to night market. Just ask anyone for 'Maeda' resturant. Chinese food is all over. McDonald's and KFC also present. Good hotel to stay are yiwu international hotel and Hindu hotel. Hotel prices are £50/night for 5 star depending on time of the year. 4 stars are £35 to £45.
Day in Futian market and nights in Binwang market and you will not get bored.

It is not the Canton Fair, but all in all there were many new and relevant booths and traders there. I had heard this is where factories moved their seconds but I did not see that. If your an importer or Trader then don't believe the rumors.

Getting there was actually more fun than being there. The trip from Shanghai's railroad station was most comfortable. The train is modern, clean, and on time. Though its speed drops the further you get away from Shanghai, as the railroad changes from "near bullet train" to "normal".
Yiwu's Trade City is a sprawling (and growing) complex of large buildings containing miriads of showrooms, mostly small, about 10 x 10 ft. Stuffed with an unimaginable assortment of models and variations of a similar item. Now, there is nothing architecturally appealing about these buildings or their inner layout. It's all strictly business functionality. You better wear very comfortable shoes. You will walk miles (yes, miles) and still no end in sight. After a while your brain will go mushy from over exposure to seemingly identical assortments of the same goods.
I mean, how many stalls can there be just for "scarfs" ? I gave up counting.
So, unless you actually have a shopping list of items you are actually interested in do not bother coming here. This is not a tourist attraction.
Final note. The toilets are rather dirty and getting a meal is tough. We ended up eating at the employees canteen. That was an experience in itself (and dirt cheap).
The taxi ride back to the Yiwu train station was - as most taxi rides - a mad race with all kinds of near death experiences. The Yiwu station is quite filthy. If you fall asleep the roaches actually start to crawl on you. This is not a joke. In contrast, Shanghais railroad station is an "uber"clean, spectacularly large, and well lit place.

Open every day all year long. From 9 am to 5:30pm. All shops start closing 5pm. Stay in a hotel near the market. Trafic jam in the morning and evening can be a problem. Several hotels near the market. m I've been to Futian market about 10 times in the last 5 years. If you looking for medium low quality products and small quantities, you may find some good deals here.
You can find good quality products if you search well. The place is just HUGE. Be prepared to walk and depending of what you are looking for, better save 2 to 3 days for this place. Last year's open some new eating options inside the market and also on the streets around. Although most options inside the market are Chinese food. Have some coffee shop inside also.
Better have a good breakfast and leave the market around 4 pm to eat at some good restaurant at the city and avoid traffic jam.
