To begin with...I do not delete, hide or edit ANY reviews on this page. That being said...our vessel is 50’ long with seating for 28 passengers and an open back deck with a rain awning for viewing and photography of the whales and wildlife. We depart from the Gustavus City dock which is approximately 9 miles from Glacier Bay Lodge and Glacier Bay. From there we generally take the 7.2 mile crossing in Icy Strait to an area by Chichigof Island known as Point Adolphus. The crossing takes about 35 minutes and quite often we will check out Sea Otters on the way over. Once we get to PA (Point Adolphus) we position ourselves near the whales and shut off the engines so we can drift with them and we place our Hydrophone in the water to hear their sounds over our speaker system. Although we always see whales (up close) we usually also see many Stellar Sea Lions, Bald Eagles and sometimes the occasional Alaska Brown Bear strolling the shores of Chichigof Island. During the course of the tour we offer information about the area, the whales, and the other wildlife we encounter. On the average we see Orca (Killer Whales) about a dozen times a season.

We were in a whale watching cruise in New England in the past but our experience with TAZ in Icy Strait was totally different and thousand times better. We were only two couples with the captain and naturalist. So in a way it was almost a private cruise :). The captain was extremely knowledgeable and brought us where he thought... More

An amazing amount of whales in this area. The captain was very experienced at finding the best place for viewing. Boat was well covered in case of rain and then easily to go outside too. Loved the trip and the energy from the staff to make it so special.

We went out with Tod and Mikalah (sp) with our family and had a wonderful time. Tod and Mikalah were both very informative giving us some good information and a few good stories. We were able to see many whales, including a few Orcas. The views were great and wildlife was everywhere. So when we weren't seeing whales, we were... More

Went out with Captain Tod and his crew on a fogging morning. Tod knew where the whale's would be found and his knowledge of their movements allowed him to manoeuvre the Taz into positions where we had excellent views of the whale's. We saw the Humpback whale's up close, arching their massive bodies, displaying their tail fins and clouds of... More

The first thing to remember is that whales are wild, and there are both state and federal laws that determine how close any boat can get to them. Having said that, we were in awe of how close Tod was able to get us to both Humpbacks and Orca despite the fact that we had been told that seeing Orca... More

We had a lot of fun with Captain Tod (Todd?) on this tour. Note: They have some good binoculars on board, as well as a few extra coats - very thoughtful! The ride didn't seem to be getting good results, until we headed off toward a whale that one of the crew spotted. The whale was breaching over and over,... More

We saw lots of whales and really enjoyed talking with Tod the captain. We were wondering if we would see any whales and we ended up watching them throughout our afternoon trip. It was a very enjoyable experience.

We had a fantastic "whale watching" experience with this team in Gustavus, AK. Their boat was just the right size for quickly maneuvering to find the beautiful humpback whales spout, surface, and wave their tails at us. They used sonar to track and monitor the whales and knew from their experience exactly what the whales were about to do. They... More

Thanks for the great comments about our tour and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Just wanted to clarify one thing. We have been asked many time by guests if we use sonar to find the whales. We do not. It is all visual. We simply look for their spouts and then head in that direction. We have had them pass... More

Vey professional operator. We saw, heard and even smelled the Whales. The boat was full yet it did not feel crowded at all. The operator knows the whales and took us to the right places. They put a microphone into the water and we could hear the whales when they did "bubble net feeding".
