There is a WWII structure and info board it's huge and was a great place to read what AK meant to the war and to siberia. there were huge statues in the middle of town for the original family that came to town. the church is right on... The first try heading down Airport hwy we drove right by downtown Fairbanks. It's a little bit back off the main road, so its easy to not see it. Downtown is cute, but definitely in need of a few more shops and restaurants. The center bridge is really cool as well as the park set behind the Yukon Quest building... More

The History, the culture, the day to day lives of Alaskan's is represented in one center. Take your time and absorb the entire Alaskan experience at the visitors center.... Highly recommend...

When we first arrived in Fairbanks we went to the Visitors Center and learned about things Fairbanks had to offer. We walked around downtown Fairbanks and visited several local museums.

So you're going to (or are in) Fairbanks. You should see downtown if for no other reason than to say you've been there. Beside, there are some things to see like the visitor center and the log cabin.

Fairbanks is unique as is all of Alaska. A riverfront trail makes a great walk through town. You can go from the Golden Heart Plaza to Pioneer Park. If you older than 60, you can ride the city bus for free so it is a wonderful way to walk one way and ride back.

Downtown Fairbanks has it's own flavor. From the "First Family" statue in Golden Heart Plaza, to the Lend Lease Memorial, to the Cultural and Visitor's Center, there is history and beauty all around. You'll miss things if you're afraid of going into little hole in the wall places but that's where you'll find art galleries and the city museum and... More

Great place to walk around and grab a bite to eat. (Go to The Crepery.) The Ice Museum is really nice. The Morris Thompson Cultural Center is very informative, and free.

For my wife and I downtown Fairbanks boils down to two venues. The Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race Headquarters located in the building that used to be the Fairbanks Visitor's Center coupled with the Golden Heart Plaza behind it and the ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL OUTSTANDING Morris Thompson Visitor's center which is an absolute DO-NOT-MISS attraction. IN ADDITION there are many funky... More

We tend to gravitate towards downtowns with public art, coffee shops, art galleries, and locally owned shops. Fairbanks delivered. We particularly enjoyed the 2 Street Gallery location.
