I invite you to visit my home, when you come to Fairbanks. I can introduce to my big , friendly huskies, (incase you need a dog- fix while you're away from your own dog) and explain what it's like out on the winter trail camping at 30 ° below zero. I will compare the camping with the routine on the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest ( I was the first woman to complete the race back in 1974, the second running.) And I will share tales of the 1,200 mile dog sled journey in Siberia, the greatest adventure I've experienced so far. Of course you'll check out the garden and go in the cabin and have some home baked refreshments, (You may have seen the cabin on the Home & Garden show) I feel so lucky to live here and I love to share my life with travelers.

My apologies for the lateness of this review. I visited with Mary in September. In fact the other people booked for her tour did not show up. She still conducted the entire tour for just myself. She was extremely hospitable and her knowledge was unbelievable - even though she was walking around with a sore foot. If you have the... More

For a dog lover, this was an excellent experience. Mary was so welcoming and knowledgeable. She welcomed our small group into her home where she told us about the dogs, her experiences with the sled dog races. While telling us about these things she served us cookies and hot tea around her kitchen table. We went to her kennel and... More

If you want to get some history of Alaska mushing by a truly adventurous lady, this is the place to visit. Her charming (sod-roofed) cabin in the woods is lovely and welcoming; the garden varied (giant cabbage was a stunner); her dogs are the last of the breed of big, strong sled dogs. After being outside we sat at her... More

Visited 11/09/16 with Road Scholar group. The pup is 3 months and so friendly, all are well trained. Mary has stories of finishing the Iditarod and the journey through Siberia in the USA and Russia culture share. A great addition to our trip.

This was a nice, personal visit with Mary in her home. She shared her stories of early days in Alaska, finding her place as a dog sledder, as well as making her home in the Last Frontier. The group was manageable, about 8-10, so that we all could ask our questions. And it was fun to interact with her dogs!

There were 5 of us in our group. We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit with Mary & her dogs. She shared her story on how she came to Alaska & got into Dog mushing. Great experience highly recommend.

This tour was the highlight of a fabulous trip to Alaska. Mary Shields, now 71, was the first woman to complete the Iditarod (in 1975). She has mushed all over Alaska and into Siberia. What a life she has lived! One of her huskies gave birth to a litter of the cutest puppies you've ever seen. We got to hold... More

This was my first time visiting Fairbanks and I had all these grand plans and tours lined up. I heard good things from Trip Advisor about the Tail of the Trail tour and I was hoping I would not be disappointed.Let me just say, this was one of my favorite tours I did. Mary is an amazing and inspirational woman.... More

Mary loves what she does. She has lovely Dogs and puppies to cuddle. She tells her life Story around an open fire place and in her cosy home as well as the Story of her riding the Iditarod. If you love to listen to stories, this is the perfect place to be. You cannot ride with the huskies though.
