Visited on a Saturday in December after a recent snow. We were the only visitors at the VC and maybe the entire park. We never saw another visitor or vehicle. It was too cold to hike so we only enjoyed the exhibits at the VC. The exhibits are well done but too much evolution commentary. The National Park Service is... More

The Visitor Center is actually a "fossil museum" with hundreds of fossils collected in this fossil-rich area. There is a great variety of fossils, including a 13-foot crocodile. When we were there, there was a lab person working on (cleaning up) a fossil fish. You were able to observe him through a glass window. Interesting! It was late in the... More

This is a hidden gem in Wyoming. It is great park to visit. Trails are well maintained and marked. Rangers are extremely helpful and will give great guidance on where to hike. Wildlife viewing is excellent (elk, deer, pronghorn and many others.) Park was not busy and easy to get around. Fossil presentation at visitor center is great.

We did this as a day trip and it was well worth it. We hiked to the old quarry first. (Definitely take water and some motivational snacks.) My kids ages 9, 7, 4 made it to the top; there are some steep parts. Bring a carrier if you have a baby. It's very interesting to see the little dark lines... More

We went on a weekday recently and were amazed at what we saw in this beautiful Place. The rangers are eager to share what they know with adults and kids who are interested. We learned about the once tropical environment that is now a "cold desert" and all of the animals, fish and plants that were once part of the... More

Great place to visit if you like fossils. The visitor's center is full of fossils, mostly of things from a prehistoric lake, not dinosaurs. If you are into fossils, go here, then go to Dinosaur National Monument in Utah. Dinosaur blows Fossil Butte away, but this is still worth coming to, just do it first. Nice hiking in the park... This is a small unit of the NPS, so we weren't expecting much. It's literally out in the middle of nowhere. Get off I-80 at Hwy 30. BE SURE TO GAS UP BEFORE THIS INTERCHANGE!!!! There's NOTHING at the turnoff. It's about a 1 1/2 hour drive to Fossil Butte, so make sure also you know where you're going to... More

Nice time line from entry to the park to the visitor center. Stop and read them all. Another time line went around the outside of the visitor center on the walkway. Active paleontologist work was taking place, we could even talk to him about the process he was using to uncover a fish fossil. There was a Junior Ranger program... More

Interesting fossil displays a short distance off of route 30, worth the time. A fairly new building with a Park Ranger using an airbrush to uncover a prehistoric fish skeleton while we watched. He answered questions as he worked, very personable and passionate about his job.

Excellent video presentations are available, as well as the opportunity to visit with staff who are preparing fossils in a manner that is easy to watch. I found this very interesting, and the hikes are nice, too!
