Housed in the former school, the museum is an interesting mishmash of local and personal history like artifacts from the Sawaya shoe store which recently closed after over a century in business, the clothing someone was wearing when struck by lightning, a coal mining diorama, etc. Not a concise historical narrative, but interesting elements of the town. We found it... More

Stopped by 20 minutes after 10 am on a Friday, but alas, even though the sign stated the winter hours were from 10-4 Monday through Friday- they were still closed. Disappointed.

Fossils are the big thing around here. The museum fills a converted church and includes lots of fossils and artifacts of the area. There's an underground mining exhibit that's very cool. I was most interested in the display of former governor Ed Herschler's stuff.

Very well laid out museum, with fossils of unsurpassed quality and conservation in the Americas and possibly in the world. Also very interesting for the laymen not only geologists! Spectacular.

Not much to see or do in the area but if you are going to Fossil Butte then it is just a few more miles drive to see the museum. The displays were informative but the heat was broke while we were there so we were cold and uncomfortable. No entrance fee was charged so it was all o.k.

I drove for 3 hours from Jackson to get here......we stumbled across the museum by chance. What a treat! this is a great collection of varied items across US history.....and it's simplicity of presentation is a delight! The main content is human history of the area......it covers in some detail the days of coal mining, and then explores other aspects... More

Stopped at the museum and found it very interesting and informative. Staff was a little 'so-so'; didn't find the gentlemen at the front desk to be very knowledgeable. Overall interesting but wouldn't go back.
