The SCAD Museum of Art was founded in 2002 as part of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. The museum's collection of more than 4,500 pieces includes works of haute couture, drawings, painting, sculpture, photography, prints and more. The SCAD Museum of Art is a teaching museum, serving Savannah College of Art and Design students and as well as members of the community and other visitors. A focal point is the Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies, a multidisciplinary center for the study, understanding and appreciation of African American culture, art and literature. It is complemented by the André Leon Talley Gallery, named for the Vogue contributing editor and SCAD Board of Trustees member. The museum also features a 250-seat theater, a terrace and outdoor projection screen, a conservation studio, a museum café, as well as a 12-foot-long orientation touch table. An 86-foot tall steel and glass lantern welcomes visitors and elegantly redefines the Savannah city skyline.

The exhibits were interesting and definitely had stories to tell. There was one former students' exhibit on her mother's addiction that was powerful. It was nice to see that it was a former students' work. It would have been nice to see more work from...More

We preferred the Telfair Museum a lot, and this was part of our ticket, but we didn't spend much time there. The statue from the cover of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is there, and it's a big draw, so do that.

I was not impressed. The first exhibit was a collection from Nigerian royalty; it was fine. The students had a fried egg art exhibit which was really cute. But there were whole exhibits that were a waste of space. One was used clothing hanging on...More

After visiting Flannery O'Connor's childhood home nearby, visit this museum for a decidedly un-gothic view of the South. The shop offers items designed by students and some of the staff are students, too.

Our granddaughter attends SCAD so we really needed to check out the museum -- not a let down, from the sliding eggs to the "box". Highly recommend as a testimonial to what our young folks are doing on the positive side these days!

I agree that this is a good art museum for families-not just galleries of paintings. That said, some twelve year old boys might not find this as interesting as other outdoor activities in the area.

I don't recall the price of admission. The museum is open to the public, no SCAD connection is necessary. They have student docents who approach you if you look bewildered and have questions, and they're a great resource... More
