Designed by British architectural prodigy William Jay in the neoclassical Regency style, the Telfair Academy is a former mansion built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair, son of Revolutionary War patriot and Georgia governor Edward Telfair. In 1875, Alexander’s sister Mary – heir to the family fortune and last to bear the Telfair name – bequeathed the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. After significant renovation by German-born architect Detlef Lienau, whose adaptations included the addition of the Sculpture Gallery and the Rotunda, the building opened to the public in 1886 as the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The first floor is decorated as it was when it was a home. The kitchen has been renovated to the time period. Other rooms have lovely art and sculpture. Paintings are interesting as there are some from very well known artists and others from unknowns (at least to us).

Enjoyed this small museum on a cloudy afternoon. Spent about an hour there. We found the rooms laid out where the family used to live more interesting than the art. Although there were a couple of paintings we lingered over. The triple venue ticket was definitely a wise purchase.

I loved reading about these lovely works of art. I was interested in how the curators displayed the works in such a way as to establish a connection with the Telfair family, especially the portrait gallery upstairs.

The museum is housed in what was once a family mansion. It is well preserved and beautifully built. The tour guide we had wasn't an art historian so I found some of the information to be a little off, but if you got a guide book you could just walk yourself through it. Its got a nice mixture of art... More

This was a unique experience. We were on one of the few ghost tours allowed entrance. Even without the haunted history, this is still a must see for anyone who wants to enjoy Savannas history.

We are 3 senior women who wanted to get a taste of Savannah and spent 4 days there enjoying the sites and the food. One highlight was visiting the Telfair Museums. Purchased the ticket that gets us in to the Academy, Jepson Center, and the Owen-Thomas House for $18 (senior rate!). A very knowledgeable tour guide named Drew Clark made... More

Decided to check it out just because and loved going into the museum that was the old house and seeing the architecture and knowing that they lived there. Seeing how it used to be set up and how it was built and now with the art inside and it's preservation was very interesting. Worth a stop on the sight seeing... More

Totally impressed with the use of space, the variety of works and the collection! We visit museums in every city we travel to, and for the size of Savannah, this is truly a gem. Thoroughly enjoyed the stroll through the museum, and each exhibit.

If you live in Savannah you should have a membership to the Telfair. It is a great value and they have several rotating exhibits throughout the year. Plus you get access to all three museum sites. I also enjoy the events they hold throughout the year, including the book fair, local art shows, and masquerade party.

Thank Justin S
