Savannah's calling card are these wonderful city squares designed by Oglethorpe when he designed the city. They were cutting edge city planning in the 18th Century and today there are beautiful parts of the city.

The one closest to City Hall is Johnson Square and it is beautiful. It has a monolith in the center dedicated to Revolutionary War Hero Nathaniel Greene, who lived in Georgia after the war and died here. His remains now rest here. The square also has the best view of city hall.

Johnson Square is the oldest (c.1733) and the largest of the 22 squares, just 3 blocks from the Savannah River with great views of City Hall. Surrounded by classic buildings such as the old Citizen and Southern bank and Christ Church as well as the Ann Hamilton house, the oldest (c.1824) on the square. One side has a more corporate feel with newer architecture. There are also 2 fountains, a sundial and an imposing monument to Revolutionary War hero, Nathaniel Greene. Enjoy the attractive walkways and greenery.

This is the first of the many city squares designed by Oglethorpe. Pretty spot with historical significance. Site of the resting place of Revolutionary War hero Nathaniel Greene. Keep in mind that many homeless like this park as well.

I found myself slowly spinning in a circle as I took this beautiful park in. It's simply breathtaking. Savannah is full of beautiful little squares and parks, but this one certainly is one of the most gorgeous ones. Definitely worth a stop. Interesting history as well! Such an amazing spot to appreciate. Very thankful for my visit.

This is one of the largest of the squares that are situated thoughout Savannah. This is the first of the squares on Bull St (starting from Bay St).
If you follow Bull St this will lead you to a few more squares till you reach Forsyth Park.
Each of the squares have a history, with Johnson Square having a monument and small fountain. These are great places to take a break and enjoy the beauty of Savannah.

We net out walking tour guide here. We started the tour with stories of James Oglethorpe. We got our first look at the mighty Live Oak Trees.

There are 24 Historic Squares in Savannah today.
The Johnson Square started it all.
It is a truly genius design. Everywhere you turn, always just few blocks away is another Square.

The white Obelisk marks a space where a revolutionary hero Nathanael Greene is buried.

The white marble bench pays tribute to Johnny Mercer, Savannah's native son. The very successful and popular songwriter.

Just like in the other Squares, the fountains and the live oaks create a peaceful and restful oasis.

We enjoyed spending time here on a beautiful sunny day...

The city has a lot of squares. I think they said 22. This one is nice. It’s shady and has a monument. It’s pretty clean. A good place to rest when walking.

One of brilliant squealers in downtown Savannah. The monument to Nathan Green is stunning.

These squares are small but extraordinary and a must visit

This square is at the center right downtown and very near the river, so it has more businesses than residences. Still it is tranquil and lovely. We enjoyed our time here.
