Shallon Winery is a very small, one-man operation that is open every afternoon, one to six PM, and has been for over 35 years. It, therefore, has to specialize in unique products unavailable elsewhere, such as totally wild berry wines, whey wines, Lemon Meringue Pie wine, and, Chocolate Orange wine. It is a working, functioning winery, not a wine shop. The winemaker prefers a one on one relation with his guests, which entails a brief visit and explanation in the wine making room, followed by tasting all the wines available in a sequence. Local historical information is usually included in the presentation. This visit may run from a minimum of a half hour to an hour or more depending on questions and conversation. Unfortunately, the winery can not afford to entertain larger groups, and frequently is closed to the walk-in public during the days of cruise ship arrivals. However, serious individuals or couples may call during the day for a suggestion for the best time, or just call the number when at the door, if it is not open.

Was looking forward to visiting this winery on our trip to the coast but were turned away because there were too many people tasting? Try again later is wheat we were told. Don't waste your time going unless you know there is room.

It pains me not to be able to accommodate each guest that takes the trouble to visit my very small winery. I am a one-man operation; after 35 years and 60,000 visitors, I still like to devote my entire attention at one time to each guest or party. Everybody has a cell phone now, so if they call the number... More

I had heard I couldn't miss a visit to Shallon Winery in Astoria, but did not expect it to be my favorite part of the day. This was definitely my favorite wine tasting experience ever. Shallon Winery is a one-man operation. We were lucky enough to get a tour and a tasting without an appointment, just happened to catch Paul... More

Thank you for the descriptions of your experience. And, this is another time "quirky" has been used; I'm getting used to it, and it is OK. More

We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit this lovely specialty winery.Paul van der Veldt is the wine maker. His claim to fame is being on the forefront of making chocolate wine. It was a treat to experience tasting his berry wines and apple wine which are made from fruits and whey. Paul is a fountain of knowledge... More

Thank you for the comments; it was a pleasant relaxed afternoon. However, for anyone reading this, I must advise not to inquire for an appointment in advance. Just call the number from nearby - or at the door - to see if one may be received immediately, or how soon. More

Shallon winery has peach, apple cinnamon, cranberry/whey and the best chocolate wine in the world in their tasting. Seriously, every other chocolate wine on the market should have "pretend" in front of its name. This is a one man operation with all wine made on the premises. Paul is older, quirky, exceptionally smart, and very, very witty. Quirky - the... More

Thanks for your comments. This is the second time "quirky" has been used. Had to look up in the dictionary again. O.K. I guess so. More

Fine local wine that is all produced right here in river city downtown Astoria. Awesome. This is a fine example of what can be done, and should be showcased do much more than it actually is. Kudos for a job well done .

We had a ball with the owner of this winery. It was part wine tasting, part history lesson. It is a one person show and I would highly recommend it. If you are looking for the normal snooty and pretentious wine tour, go elsewhere. If you are looking for a fun, quirky and entertaining local who is quick to tell... More

Going to the Shallon Winery is an experience unlike any other. It's not a place for the impatient or if you're in a hurry. First you'll get a tour of the winery itself and then you'll taste all the fruit wines. However the tasting is more of a conversation and lesson on winemaking. To be clear, these are not your... We stopped here on a whim on our way back to Seaside, and spent the next hour or two with the proprietor. He is almost 90, so if you plan to visit, go soon, I'd say, though he seems in fine fettle. We tasted 5 wines and bought two bottles. Totally unique, fresh fruit and chocolate flavor, and NOT SWEET.... More

Thanks so much for your kind words. If you got the dry Wild Blackberry; I don't think aging this one for several years will particularly benefit it. If you got the Cran du Lait, remember to refrigerate it adequately before opening. Paul More

We stopped to visit Shallon Winery and Mr. Van Der Veldt when our cruise ship stopped in Astoria. Having read online about the place we were anxious to purchase some Chocolate Orange wine. The door was locked when we arrived and a sign said "tours by appointment". We called the number and were told to come back in 20 minutes.... More

The reference to cruise passengers was misinterpreted. I like all of my some 60,000 guests in 34 years. However, since I am a one man operation, it is not possible for me to entertain up to 2,000 visitors from cruise ships that may descend on this small town of 10,000 in one day. Previously have had to lock the door... More
