We have lived down here for several years and never visited this place. Our loss, as this is a must for anyone wanting a quit trip back to nature. The little visitor center has a lot of artifacts from the past and very well displayed. I would recommend this to anyone looking for something for the kids and adults. Remember... More

A free activity. An interesting description of the first French settlers in the XVII century. The site offers nice walks. A bonus : Your dog is welcomed on the trails !

Fortunately we visited Fort Matanzas first. They had a video which explained the relationship between that fort and this one. This site had a video, but it had not been working in quite a while and apparently no one had tried to get it fixed. There is an interesting museum with lots of artifacts. There are several features attached to... More

This National Monument is very well maintained by a staff that clearly cares about the place. A small visitors center has some very interesting displays about the history of the area. For those who participate in the Passport program the stamps for your book are located in the visitor center at the Ranger's desk. A short walk from the visitor... More

This place is filled with American history. It has a small museum, interactive displays, and the grounds are gorgeous. Best thing is, it's free!

We had no idea what this fort was when we turned in. The staff was extremely helpful and we learned a great deal. Much blood was spilled at Fort Caroline, a small "fort" where the inhabitants were starved and at the same time did battle to survive. Why would anyone volunteer to defend this little plot of land? Aside from... More

Ft. Caroline National Memorial is a great historic and nature site located on the south bank of the St. Johns River, about halfway between Downtown Jacksonville and the Atlantic Ocean. Centerpiece of the vast Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve, Ft. Caroline has a replica fort that stands in the approximate spot where French Huguenots established their base camp in 1564.... There are two main sections to the park. One is the fort, which is off of a very short trail and is great for all ages. On the other side of the road are the hiking trails - there are varying difficulty levels, but make sure you take the trails to the end, where there is an amazing overlook of... More
