This museum used to be so much better. It no longer has a shop or the top floor kids area (which was fantastic). It's overall a very boring museum - the little artwork they have is so boring and sparse. The staff are not friendly. We were barely greeted upon arrival - the attendant was very ho-hum and had no care that we were there at all. We only came across two other visitors the whole time. Would probably never return.

We had planned on spending several hours here --but saw everything in 15 minutes. Couldn't believe they think they are a museum! They need to close the doors, shut down and save tax payer dollars. (We enjoyed Cummer Museum.)

This is a joke -- my livingroom has more artwork than this "museum." Visiting JAX, and both my wife and I love art museums. Pre-paid for 2 hours of street parking -- thought I might need more time, but it turned out I had overpaid by about 1:40. Senior entry was $5 each. There were no more than 20 paintings/artwork, including student artwork from UNF. Unbelievable. If free at a local library, I would have thought it was a cute display. For an art museum in a city of almost 1 million people, it was an embarrassment. Confirms a general impression to outsiders that Florida is a cultural desert. Only upside is that it had a clean bathroom.

So nice museum. Small, thought would be bigger, incredibly not much to see. Also one of the floors are being updated. Restaurant closed on wknds which makes visit even more boring.

But just as important as the Museum, I would strongly recommend planing to eat in its first floor dining room, Menu prices are moderate, servings generous, variety very extensive and presentations show you are in an art museum.

We are not huge fans of contemporary art. BUT Saturdays were free so why not visit?? The staff was so friendly and nice. We really enjoyed our visit. There are a couple of interactive experiences which the staff are very happy to do with you. Some of the art we liked. Others not so much but that happens at any type of museum.
The other reason we decided to visit was parking is free downtown on Saturday. We also walked around in downtown Jacksonville to appreciate the beautiful architecture. Make sure you see City Hall which is near the museum.
Also on Saturdays there is an outdoor festival which takes place. Riverside Arts Market. This is free however it is not within walking distance of the museum. But since parking is free on Saturday you can start at the market and then go to the museum.
Yes there are homeless people in downtown Jacksonville. No there are not a lot of homeless people and they do not approach you. You will be safe.
We are very glad we enjoyed all of downtown Jacksonville!

Dreary Sunday, empty section of downtown and a number of homeless trying to find a warm place to hole up. Not the best environment to get you in the right mood. Good news was street parking is free on Sunday and the homeless mind their own business.
The museum charges $8 but you can get $3 off with AAA.
Hard to say it was worth the $10. There were on our visit, three floors of exhibits. A lot of floor space to fill. We were not overly impressed with what was displayed. But to be honest, art is one of those things that each individual has to decide for themselves.
It took us an hour.
There is an elevator, along with restrooms and water fountains on every floor.

Small gallery . The art was good but limited. The gift shop was really nice. Did not eat there but the cafe looked good.Staff rather subdued . I liked the city skyline going in. The visiting photo museum was interesting and the wood cuts were amazing. I think a more modern, Young and risqué approach would serve the city better.

I definitely disagree with the previous reviews. This museum has five floors, but only two floors are dedicated to art installations. The first floor is the restaurant and gift shop, the fourth floor is only administrative offices, and the fifth floor is the children's area (with a photography installation currently residing on the way to the restroom). That leaves only the second and third floors. They are not large rooms. The second floor is the museums permanent installation, and the third floor changes. It is currently the Andy Warhol floor. I saw all of the art there was to see in less than 40 mins, but I'm sure that some people see it faster. My son had fun at the play area, and we spent a half hour there. My biggest complaint comes from how I was treated by the female security guard who walked up on me breastfeeding my son. We arrived as soon as the museum opened, and we were literally the only patrons in the whole building. My son was hungry, so I sat on the only bench I could find started nursing him. The security guard walked over from across the room and said "..Oh!! Oh. You know we have a nursing room for that, right? On the fifth floor. So I suggest you go use that. Now." And she stood there next to me until I got up and left. I decided to check out that nursing room she was talking about...it was just the ladies bathroom.

I went with my 13 and 10 year old boys. I had read other reviews about the art and the front desk subtly "warned" me about the nude art on the second floor. However being the parent I feel I'm best to make the call on what my kids can handle.
So we went to the second floor, and I noticed that a security guard was behind us. Ok, no big deal. So we went to the third floor where the Smoke and Mirrors exhibit was displayed. We come upon some kind of class which was blocking the entrance to the exhibit. Once again we see the security guard........ Hmmmmmmm........ So we go to another part of the floor and guess what! That's right, the security guard was there again!
At this point I went downstairs to the front desk to get our entrance fee back. I will give them credit for the fact they refunded my money immediately and without any hassle.
I will say this, I don't think I would have been followed if I didn't have kids.

About how long does it take to walk through the museum? I know it is different for each person, but just want to know relatively how long it takes. Also which do you think is better: moca or cummer?

MOCA Jacksonville exhibits art on four floors. "Project Atrium" installations are displayed in the Atrium Gallery. The Permanent Collection and exhibitions in the UNF Gallery at MOCA are displayed on the second floor. Featured exhibitions are displayed on the third floor. Education-related exhibitions are displayed on the fifth floor, where there is also an interactive, hands-on area for families. Most of the artwork can be viewed in two to four hours, depending on how much time viewers prefer to spend with the works.
