We had read reviews which suggested that this was an easily doable trail with interesting sites along the way. We strongly differ! Although we found the beginning sites (up to the Bat Cave) to be worth the effort of traversing the 7/10 mile trail, we...More

We did not walk the whole trail as it was late in the day and the kids were getting tired. However, they wanted to see some lava tubes so we walked to the first 3 markers. If we had enough time I would have liked...More

Our family visited El Malpais National Monument on a recent Monday afternoon. Since we were also going to nearby El Morro National Monument we chose to stop at the El Calderon trail due to them being located off the same highway. The trail is located...More

The ground was flat and an easy walk and there were some intersting sites on this area of El papais which erupted 115,000 years ago. There is a great deal of lava activity and old basalt rock, a few caves and pretty country. Not the best...More

We were in the area and saw the sign for the trail. The trail is very flat except for the short climb to the scenic overlook. Very cool sites on the trail including caves, sinkholes, lava trenches, and the volcano overlook.

This is an easy 3.8 mile path past some interesting features including some really scary sinkholes. This is an easy hiking path that is mostly level and easy to follow.

Entering the caves requires specific safety equipment - flashlights, helmut, gloves, appropriate clothing. No one should entercaves alone. Free cave permit available at ranger station. Cave entry requires decent into ground opening. Then work your way underground. Short hike to access any of 2 caves.

Interesting geology and explanations along the trail. Trail is well marked. It is fun to be in an extinct volcano.

This is a well-maintained trail that is easy on the dogs paws-- the other trails in El Malpais are not due to the lava. But if you take your dog, you can't enter the cave- just be aware of that before you go. El Calderon...More
