We drove down the east side of the area on a day when the weather was not helpful so we didn't do much hiking though there were interesting walks to be had. Mostly we were impressed with the visitor center just off the freeway. It is a large center for a national monument so far off the beaten track and... More

El Malpais seems a bit off the beaten path, but is totally worth the trip. Our family of 5 visited and we all loved it. I think it was the highlight of our roadtrip from Las Vegas through ABQ, south, and back up to Phoenix. We first stopped at the El Calderon area to climb through the lava tube near... More

Road a little rough and narrow, looks like they might be going to work on it. Nice shortcut drive from Hwys 40 to 60

My husband and I decided to do a day trip to El Malpais and El Morro NM. The day was sunny and warm in the sun. We stopped first at the visitor center, which is at exit 85 off of I-40. This visitor center is open all year, but the other centers are not. Check the NPS website before you... More

The east side of the park, off exit 89 on I-40 is nicest. If you're traveling west get off there first do you don't have to back track. Follow signs down 117. Don't worry if the ranger station is closed there are facilities at Sandstone Overlook and also at the Arch. Those two stops give you a nice sampling. Get... More

Stop at the Visitor center to get information to plan on what you want to do and see. The area is a formerly active volcano site long quiet, but the evidence of the lava flows are everywhere. We hiked up the Rim trail (parallel to the road) a short distance for a more meadow/woods experience with an elevated view from... More

Very lovely, but the trail was mushy. Must be great in the summer. Only went in about a mile, but it was well marked.

We stopped at the New Mexico visitor center. This monument was a recommendation. So cool. You have to see it for yourself to believe it. The mountains are awesome and this arc was not exception.

October 12, 2016 - First, take Exit 85 of Route 40 to the Northwest New Mexico visitors center. Review the exhibits, talk with a ranger and get a map of the Monument to determine where you would like to drive and hike. After we left the visitors center, we got back onto Route 40 and drove to exit 89, where... More

This park was bigger than we expected. There are extensive trails available but you do need to drive about 40 miles to get close to the main attractions. Once there, the scenery is spectacular. Make sure to walk out to the arch.
